You can see the rubber seal when you open the cap to check if it's deformed or damaged. The cap should be a tight fit when you close it - you should have to push the cap down before you lock it.

It's easy enough to remove the cap but I'm not sure you can do much to service it. Just remove the allen bolts round the rim (the bolts at 12, 3 and 9 o'clock positions are dummies - the other 4 hold the cap on). Unlock the cap and you can then lift it off.

Check the drain hole is clear. These are known to get blocked and rot through from being filled with water. If that's happened that could possibly be the source of the fuel smell. You'll see the drain hole under the cap on the left hand side. Stick the straw from your WD40 down there and give it a good squirt. You should see it come out the breather hose that runs behind the engine case on the right hand side.

cheers i looked in and the rubber is fine, i then took it off and cleaned the inside rim, i sprayed down the drainage hole, it was all fine, and from your link it looks like there is a small vapour release so nothing to worry about.

cheers for the help and pointers
