hi all
i bought a K7 SV650 a few months back with 5000 miles on it. put it in for a 7500 service with a local bike shop (not main dealer but guys normally been great with previous bikes). he's saying he found metal in the oil and that the bike has a knock. the knock i've thought was generally an SV thing as i've heard lots about the noisy motor and it doesn't sound/act like your classic metal on metal knock if anything its a bit like slightly unsynched carbs (i know its fi) below 3-4k. goes quieter when clutch is pulled in when in neutral. doesn't seem down on power,no oil pressure light, oil level checked weekly and ok Looking on various forums it seems like the knock itself is well known and can be anything from spun bearings to just the way the clutch/crank interact. anyone on this board had any experience with this on a low mileage bike. Doubt the things been stunted as it was one lady owner(who wanted a cruiser instead)/FSH and has been ridden as a commuter by me (mostly motorway). it did fall off the stand once with engine running but i killed it within a couple of seconds. any opinions/anyone else seen this? thinking it might need a full rebuild but i can't see how that's possible for something that's done such little mileage and only done its first MOT this year. |

My 2007 has always had noises at idling, it is not as loud when the clutch is in as you say.
It may be normal, mine is just at 4000 miles. A friend has a thou and I cant hear his but then he has different cans fitted than the standard ones, |

The SV engine is neither particularly noisy, nor particularly quiet, but by its nature will never be a paragon of mechanical smoothness or silence.
Specifically the engine, because of its 'V' configuration, fires somewhat unevenly, essentially the power strokes cause the crankshaft to accelerate and decelerate noticably and at low engine speed this is more apparent still as the time between the pulses is consequently longer, the pulsing nature of the engine's rotation causes the clutch in particular to make noise. I'd be more concerned to learn more about the metallic particles found in the oil - what are they? A small amount is not unusual in a young engine, but obviously it should be a small amount, and it shouldn't continue too long.

Probably best to have a listen to a few SV's and see. They can knock slightly if they are out of balance or if the tickover is too low.
Big end knock will get louder with rpm and generally sound very nasty.
