Hi, i have a friend who has an sv650s 2005
He was having issues changing gear, stiff and cluncky ect.... so.......... 1.) I adjusted chain to correct tension 2.) adjusted biting point to the correct point using the lever adjustment screw 3.) lubed the cable 4.) Greased the mechanism 5.) Check the gear shifter peg and mechanism was in full working order and nothing had been damaged or had come loose ect... I then took the bike for a spin and it still seems very cluncky and hard to shift up and down all gears. Its also hard to get in neutral as you have to give it that much force to get it out of first you end up skipping up to second when aiming for neutral. any advice would be appreciated. 1 last point to note is that the bike got 15k on the clock, could the clutch cable have stretched which would stop it being pulled far enough? |

did you adjust the clutch at both ends? and an old cable with just make it abit harder to pull if adjusted properly.
also oil level and ages/ milage of the oil as i changed mine yest and what a difference it has made. youve covered the main points maybe give the pivots of the gear change a clean and grease. if all of this is right im stumped but someone with more knowlage will surely be along soon. |

Thanks badger, i will adjust the cable at the engine end a little maybe and lube the pivots like you say.
Oil level was fine but it is 6000 miles old approx so i will do that as well. |

perhaps using the actual clutch adjuster might help this issue, you know the one under the front sprocket cover, rather than just the span with the cable ones, just a thought

As mentioned already, adjust at engine at engine side and a change of oil and that should sort it. Oil is supposed to have a big impact on how smooth or rough the clutch operates on the sv.

the level of oil can also have an impact. Too much oil (even though it isnt over the full marker) can cause clutch drag and a PITA to select gears, especially when stationary or at low engine revs

With the bike in first and clutch in, does the bike stay stationary or want to creep forward slightly?

Try cleaning and regreasing the the push rod mechanism under the front sprocket cover. Mine developed a real problem and it turned out to be a bit of grit stuck in it. The push rod can get corroded so clean that too.
As mentioned Oil level can make a difference. Slightly too much makes it hard work on my K3. I also replaced the clutch cable on mine when I did the bar conversion and could not believe how light and gentle the clutch control really is. Other more serious issues, could it be possible that the clutch itself is a bit worn out or even a damaged gear box component? I had a an old rat bike that had a worn gear box, that was a swine to get into gear when not moving along the road. |

OK stiff gear change.
Remove the lever from the peg. There is a split fibre bush. carefully remove it using a small screwdriver. You cannot but a replacement if you break it. Now clean off all the corrosion (I know it is ally) on the inside of the lever. I wrap a bit of emery round an old drill and run it through the hole. Refit the bush, a bit of grease and reassemble. corrosion tightens the fit of the lever onto the peg pivot.
