Default Home Security

After a bit of advise please.

Last night someone I know got burgled. For reasons I shall not go into, we have reason to believe we know who did this, and if we are right then it is a grudge-based motive.

The person who got done last night has a very similar house to mine. Same back door, front door, windows, etc.

Entry was gained via the back door by force. Unsure how as of yet but whatever they did, didnt make any/much noise. Noone heard a thing. Reports that a crowbar went missing from neighbour's shed, so assuming that was used.

Doors are of the uPVC variety, with those door handles that you pull up to lock with a key.

What is the best way to secure these?

I thought about using those slidey bolt things that go top and bottom, but as its being screwed into plastic I doubt it'd do much.

Now have to look for somewhere else to store my bike too Doubt he could steal it with anti-pinch pin and 16mm pragmasis chained to the porch but could easily damage it.

Mate to be honest with you putting in a upvc door is hard , even the old ones with the three locking pins are murder to force, majority of hb's I've dealt with normally the bottom door panel is forced out of the actual door.Best bet would be to fit alarm sensor to the door so that if its opened once set you'll hear the alarm and the housebreaker will $hit themselves due to the noise-either that or get a dog.

Thanks Husky.

The doors were fitted by the local council, so we really didnt get much choice in the matter. I'll see if I can get more details on the actual break in to try and deduce how they did it.

Already have 2 dogs but they a couple of timid ankle-biters.

Will have a look around for some alarms, but I dont have £1000's to spend on a "proper" system.

you can get the door sensor ones that a hi pitched alarm goes off for under 20 quid mate-once you switch them on if the door is forced the contact is broken and the alarm goes off mate-you don't need to spend crazy money-that and movement security lights outside that come on-the idea is to let them know/think that your property is cover by security measures.

Yeah I just found a couple, like this:

I was just wondering if it had to be "always on", just thinking it would be a nightmare during the day etc.

Worth a shot, would make me missus feel much better.

It'll have an On /off switch mate. Also look at the ways to stop them getting into your property-if they can get access to the rear of your house your making it easy for them-chain and padlock on the gate so they need to climb, nothing at hand for them to stand on, fit a timer to a table lamp so it comes on for a couple of minutes every hour or two during the night-make them think someone MIGHT be up.

Hong,

You can get some very good tips from watching Home Alone! Micro-machines all over the stairs etc etc...

Hong, I used to fit the uPVC doors in my old job and there is a couple of ways of getting in that I know of.

1. If there was a gap between the frame and the wall and it wasn't packed correctly or at all then with older locks you could bend the frame to release the pins from their locking place. But this is very rare and would need a lock without the hooks that pop out.

2. If the beading that holds the glass or panel in is on the outside and no security tape was used before the glass/panel was put in then it would fall out when the beading was took out.

3. If the door has a flag style hinge then it was possible to lift the back of the door out of the hinge.

4. The most common way is to bump the lock cylinder using a filed down key. You can buy anti bump lock cylinders to prevent this.

To prevent the best way is just to buy a big dog. If someone wants to get in they will no matter what you do.

Oh and a side note to any Police viewing this thread. Please go and tell the entry teams to stop hitting the lock side of the door like I keep seeing on TV. One hit on the panel or glass and you'll be in.

Cheers Seggons. I have no idea what type of lock or door it is or how to tell lol. Its white

I've ordered a couple alarms, and I'll leave my baseball bat next to my bed

The kitchen light is left on overnight anyway, as the dogs are kept in there (and that is the room the back door is in).

Even if they break in once after the alarm goes off I doubt very much they'll come back.

And Tommy, my house is already like that! 6yr old and 2yr old
