Default Photography Websites

So I bought the Mac, just ordered elements 10 and hopefullysoon will be putting some photos on the web. Thinking of starting my own website and just wondered if anyone has done it, how easy/expensive is it? Can it be done yourself or do you need to go through an agent or whatnot?

Cheers

Si

decide on your .com/.co.uk address and then register with 1and1.co.uk and buy a hosting package from them, then use iWeb to design your website and upload it to your host using Cyberduck

using the same tools as above I built, uploaded and published my website in under a week and it was the first time I had ever built a website, iWeb is an amazing bit of software that you get free with your Mac and so easy to use

Expense wise, it's dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things. I think I pay less than £35 for the .com address 10 mailboxes and 2 years hosting. If you're ever going to be looking at selling prints in the future, the personalised email address will be worth that alone. It amazes me sometimes at the amount of businesses that are still using hotmail and gmail accounts for business when it costs next to nothing to set up your own domain.

Take a look at using Wordpress on your site once you get set up too (for getting your domain and hosting 1and1 are good as are 123reg). I know a lot of people think wordpress is just for blogging but it can be sooo much more than that. And it's free. There are tons of themes out there that are way more professional looking with more functionality than anything even a lot of seasoned web designers could come up with. Google 'free wordpress photography themes' and you'll see what I mean.

I wouldn't bother trying to get to grips with learning even something as simple as iWeb and spending a weekend trying to build a nice site when even my computer illiterate brother could have a pro looking site up and running in a couple of hours for free. Even I use wordpress for my portfolio site and I'm a graphic designer for a living!
