Got a loan of a carb balancer (dial type) and will give it a go as i have had bike a few years and its not been done. I have an extension on the front vacuum (sp?) point from when i had carbs off a while ago so no problems with burnt hands etc.
Where i need a bit of advice is that my haynes mentions the need of a vacuum pump on the fuel tap and i dont have one so do i need this piece of kit before i start? Also after a bit of a search on here i found that i can/should do the balance without taking the airbox off? http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php...2&postcount=11 Is this correct before i bugger up a happy bike. Edit: forgot to say its a naked 99 ![]()

vacuum pump is so carbs don't run out of fuel as you are using the fuel line as vacuum point.
from memory yes you can adjust the carbs with the airbox on (i'll let someone with more knowledge answer this though) ahhh well you see if you had got one of my super duper vacuum tail kits you would be laughing... ![]() |

You can adjust the carb balance while the airbox is on, as you already have an extension on the front vacuum take off. The balancer screw isn't so tight and you can usually turn it with your fingers.
Remove the fuel line that goes from the tap to the pump at the pump end and place in suitable container. Find a screwdriver that's a snug fit into the vacuum hose to the fuel tap, remove the vacuum hose from both ends and push the screwdriver into the hose about three inches, refit the hose to the tap, gently pull the screwdriver back along the line about an inch or so and the resultant vacuum will be applied to the tap diaphragm, when fuel flows from hose into container you will know how far out you must pull the screwdriver to make it work.

Personally I take airbox off, and just suck on vacuum pipe every 20s or so to let some fuel in.

![]() Wow can balanced carbs really make that much difference to the running of the bike or am i just imagining it? They were a good way out (1st balance in 3 years) and before i did them i had a sort of judder pulling away in first, i assumed it was my clutch control but now after balance its disappeared and the bike sounds and moves better?
