Default Potentially stupid question about wheel balancing.

Just a last minute ****up, can anyone answer me this question 100% ?

Can I balance a wheel without the discs?

My limited mechanical knowledge / knowledge of physics says I should balance it with them on. as they're unlikely to be identically worn/manufactured... However I'm not sure how much tolerance there is to play with? In fact common sense just says; set it up how it's going to be.

And with it being a motorcycle, prospect of death and all I like to do things properly (honestly!) so I'm thinking I need to balance it with the discs on really unless anyone can give me a solid answer otherwise? i.e my expectations of how much of an exact science it is are too high.

Any relevant answers muchly appreciated!

yes. They should have no affect on the balancing on the wheel

Is that something to do with the direction of the forces or just simply because their difference in mass will be so marginal?

i think they are machined to a fine tolerance and should be balanced from factory. Any difference in them i imagine is so marginal you wouldn't notice them

Yes shouldn't cause much issue

As your balancing the wheel to the rim or balancing the rim to level out factory tolerances

Ideally you'd balance the wheel with the discs on, that way all the masses involved are there at the time you're working it out.

That said, the discs have less mass and are closer to the centre of rotation, so their effect is much smaller than that of the tyre and rim together. So balancing without the discs would be better than not balancing at all. Generally these things aren't a million miles out anyway

CHeers jambob!
That makes me feel less of an idiot for driving miles last night to collect them. I also forgot I have magnets in one of the discs so thought it was for the best

Static balance you can get away with 2 grams with out much issues.
As long as they are new ,quality ones not going to cause a head ach.
