Default British Airways Olympics Ad

The one with the plane rolling down the street accompanied by Londons Calling by The Clash.

It might just be me (my wife has already tutted and walked away, sensing I was moving into full "rant" mode) but is this not a really inappropriate piece of music?

I have no problem with the song - far from it. But, other than the title, did the ad people actually listen to any of the lyrics?

Nuclear war, global warming, violence and police brutality - that's what will encourage people to visit London? They've even edited in the line "The engines stop running" on an advert for a bloody airline FFS.

Is there some subtle ironic joke that I'm missing here?

And don't tell me this doesn't matter. It just does.

Just reinforces the fact that PR media types are all ******s, and I'm not generalising!

I'm pretty sure innapropriate lyrics are commonplace and most people don't realise it. Not too many people know verse six of our national anthem for instance...

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the Queen

To be fair they weren't inappropriate at the time.

Nor was the verse exhorting god to "confound their knavish tricks, and disrupt their politics" when referencing foreign nations.

Which is why we tend to not sing them anymore.

Although we might add verse six back in with a name change if scottish independence goes ahead, I'm not sure Marshal Wade will be up to the task these days.

There's an ad for some product for young children (I think it is) that has an animated mother and child. The music is the melody only from "Knock 'Em Out" by Lily Allen, a song about her driving away sleazebags in the pub by telling them increasingly outrageous lies, culminating in having herpes, syphillis and AIDS.

1936

Was also supposed to be in 1940 olympics but people seemed a little too distracted at the time to bother with sport as a whole.

Didn't make it back into the Olympics post war, but the gliding community try to get it included every so often...
