Default 250,000 milestone?

Hi all,

I was having my brakes serviced today and the chappy I was doing it with mentioned a friend of his who had a Suzuki gsx1100 at 150,000 miles.

He then said that if the bike gets to 250,000 miles you can return it to Suzuki where they will take it apart piece by piece to see why it is still going. They will also give you a brand new bike.

Does anyone know any truth in this? I'm a few thousand miles off but still interested :P

Also if it is true is it just Suzuki or do other manufacturers do it aswell?

TIA,

George

Sounds like an urban legend to me.

I'm not sure there's a hard & fast milestone, but this is essentially:
1) R&D output the like of which the factory doesn't get to do themselves
2) Great publicity (look, our customers get 250,000 miles and still going strong!)

A number of cars (especially Hondas/Volvos) that have done a million miles + have had one-off offers similar to the above from the factory for these reasons, but mostly reason 2.

Back in the late 90's a courier put a million motorway miles on what was then one of the new Triumph models. I don't remember which one. Triumph bought it back for silly money and gave him a new bike.

I can't find any mention of it online but it's a true story. Must have been around 1996-97 as I was a courier myself at the time and everybody in the scene was talking about it.

A couple of BMW GS's with 1million miles on them, at which point BMW will PX it for a new bike. 250,000 seems a little low, as it's not really that much if your using it all day everyday.

If you could get a free bike for 250,000 miles, you could just buy a knackered old bike, get it running (keep all the core chassis numbers/engine numbers the same) and trade it in. Or, just clock the bike.

Just doesn't seem like it's true. Probably a 1 off publicity stunt as mentioned above.

urban myth

R&D Take the motors up to about the 100,000 mark if its a totally new motor on several hacks, and torture them to failure on the dynos.

Most know they'll do 100k 150k without a major strip and rebuild

Honda certainly don't do swaps at 250k

My old 1983 CB250RS had clocked up 192,000 miles by the time I gave it away to a mate. It was given to me as a knackered old hack with a mere 135,000 on the clock - I firstly ran it up and down between Worksop and Bedford at weekends for a year or so, then I ran it back and forth between Bedford and Slough or Harrow for 2 years as a commuter (a round trip of 100 miles a day, five days a week) and then a few trips to Scotland to see my then girlfriend, and then some more down to Wiltshire when she moved, plus some more mileage outside of work. For the last year of ownership I was running a ZZR1100 that clocked up above average mileage too. I used to spend an awful lot of time in the saddle.
