Could anyone tell me if a faulty regulator rectifier would cause the wiring loom to melt from the negative lead on battery. I have a 2000 curvy that has had a problem starting for a while so this weekend I decided to get to the bottom of it, I found a melted wire from the generator it was the negative wire so I replaced it charged the battery and started the bike I have the seat off so I can see what's going on and with the engine running the negative lead off the battery is smouldering so I've turned the bike off. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is no negative wire from the generator, the wires from the generator are the three phase wires, which exactly wire is it that's the problem, and what size?

Sorry Sid just checked the wiring diagram the initial wire that was melted was blue with white tracer that goes to the ignition unit I replaced it and now the negative from the battery that goes to the reg rec is smoking I disconnected the reg rec started the bike again and the wire is fine, which suggests my reg rec is knackered.

True, I very much suspect you're right and I hesitate to argue with that diagnosis, but I would think it worthwhile to have a scout around to make sure everything else is as it should be - alternator windings/wiring etc before spending any money on new bits.
