Default Couple questions after looking inside my '99 curvy airbox

Hi guys, please could you look at these photos from my '99 curvy sv650 airbox? I have a few questions.

1) Is that a normal amount of oil to see in the airbox from the crankcase breather system? I haven't checked it in the 3000 miles I've had the bike, so I don't know how many miles worth of oil overflow that is because I don't know when the previous owner last cleaned it.

2) Does that air filter need replacing? It didn't look particularly dirty to me but it's a fairly uniform grey colour. Are they white when new? If so I may think about replacing that.

3) What is the rubber sheet inside the throttle body for? Looks like it's drastically reducing airflow, but I don't know if that's just to increase the inlet gas velocity and in reality it's not choking the cylinder? My bike was dyno'd at 70bhp so it's not causing any harm. I'm guessing Suzuki could use the same throttle body on an sv1000 and remove the rubber sheet to allow more air for the bigger engine. Cheaper than having different size throttle bodies for the different models.

Thanks for any help!

I don't know most of the answers there. I will say though, that a curvy has carbs and an sv1000 is like a 650 points. Fuel injected. So the same units couldn't be used on both.

I don't think suzuki did another v-twin alongside the 99-02 curvy SV. although I may be wrong as I steer clear of the cruiser side of the market lol.

Someone else will be able to help u with the rest soon, I'm sure .

Cheers
Oli

I'd say the amount of oil is nothing to worry about. You inevitably get some oil mist carry-over in a simple breather systen like theh SV has, and once in the airbox it doesn't dry out so just gradually accumulates. Wipe it out while you're in there to make yourself feel better (but it'll come back again!)

The filter looks just fine from that pic, though bear in mind the outside is the clean side so should look reasonably OK. How cruddy does the inside dirty side look? In real life an air filter in the UK should usually be good for at least 25k miles, our air quality is generally pretty good.

The black bit in the carb bore is the slide, it lifts as the airflow increases due to a spring and diaphragm arrangement, maintaining an approximately constant vacuum (hence the term "CV carb") over the jetting system, at least during some of the range anyway, and it lifts the needle to meter fuel accordingly (it's more complex than that, but it's a start). You can try gently lifting it to make sure it's working OK, it should spring back down again to that position. On full throttle when the engine is running it'll be lifted up out of the way. The throttle plate is just a little way downstream of the slide.

Been lot worse than that when it dumped all the excess into the airbox
