Apparently you add the acid, seal it and then charge it.

As Mav said, they come dry charged from the factory. Put the acid in, seal it off then give it about an hour and will be good to go. If you can charge it, always good to give it the best start in life.

Ah right sorry guy's, reckon I'll just get the battery then, no need for the charger at the moment then unless I was going to see if I could recover this battery, but that would work out twice as expensive if I then still had to get a new one, decisions decisions.

Probably worth getting a optimate or similar if you don't ride the bike often (over winter etc) Will give you the best life out of a battery if its kept in a good health.

Definitely worthwhile having a charger. The Optimate's a good piece of kit, it's a proper multi stage charger so you can leave it connected without boiling your battery dry. It uses a standard connector ("Tamiya") so you can make your own adapter(s) from readily available parts.

If it's just for emergencies or occasional use you can get dead cheap chargers that just put out a low but fixed current. Don't leave these permanently connected. For example this one's 500mA ...

Andy, this is the one I use, I had a connector on both my sprint and drz for hassle free charging when I needed it.

How do you know the battery is dead if you've not tried charging it?

I'd certainly try getting a proper smart charger, they've got recovery modes and a gentle trickle charge over a few weeks can certainly recover a nearly duff battery and get it back to life again. Try a charger first, and if it's still not having it then get a battery.
