Ok so I'm changing the head bearings and so far have managed to get the old races out, the new ones back in and the old bottom bearing off the stem.
I've got the 32006JRRS bearing for the bottom and left the old dust cover on the stem. Was this the wrong thing to do and should the sealed bearing be fitted on its own without the sealing plate? ![]() |

Forgot to mention, it's a GSXR750 K7 front end. Ignore the frosting, I'd had the yoke in the freezer overnight before fitting the bearing.

From that pic, the new lower bearing has an integrated dust seal so yes, wrong thing to do.
For future reference, not all tapered roller bearings are made with integral dust seals and in that case, it'd have been correct to use the old dust seal if still okay or fit a new dust seal. You'd need to remove the bearing, take off the unneeded(in this case) separate dust seal and put the tapered roller bearing back on. Unless you have a hydraulic press to push out the 'stem', I can't think of a way to remove the bearing without damaging it. Good luck. |

I think I did the same thing as Nobbylad the last time I did a steering bearing change. For my TZR250 which I'm going to be using tapered bearings on, I think the lower does come with an integrated dust seal and an additional seal in the kit. My current intention is to use the dust seal and then bearing, unless someone can give me a reason why I shouldn't?

Luckily, I was able to cut the rubber off the old sealing plate then cut it with snips, a dremmel and bend it with pliers until it came off. With time and patience it worked without fouling the new seal/bearing.
Trouble is it was stuck solid and needed a few hours back in the freezer, an old fork leg, a stunt peg off a bmx and a lump hammer to encourage it to slide down the last 5mm. ![]() Job jobbed! Last edited by Nobbylad; 06-05-13 at 09:48 PM. |

Good morning all.
It's always a good idea to use bearings with an integral seal. I have seen some that have been fitted with a seperate seal that fouls the bearing. A good tip when fitting stem bearings, is to very lightly rub the stem down using 1200 grit wet & dry paper used wet, & to grease the stem, & the inside of the bearing with a little Moly grease. They slide on much easier than when dry. I press them on using my 6 ton Flypress, for which resistance is futile ![]() Cheers. P.S. I like your improvised whacker. I have many old fork tubes that get cut up & used for other purposes. Last edited by Spanner Man; 07-05-13 at 06:58 AM. |
