Default OMO: Plumber help urgent-ish

OK so I'm not flooding my house but only because I've turned the water off. I had a go at replacing the filling valve on one of the toilets tonight (done the upstairs one before, piece of proverbial) this one now won't stop leaking.

Looks like that and the leak is coming from the two brass bits, hence trying my best to lock them as tight as possible and mauling the surface a little. the part onto the plastic seems to have sealed pretty well but I must've loosened something in the brass bits and it won't seal again.

No answer too stupid, all I've done is unfasten them and screw the new part on, I've not got any tape and such but the upstairs one didn't need it so I figured the same with this.

ANY help much appreciated so I can have some water on again for the morning. Even if just a decent suggestion of how to stop this line up because I can't have the water on to anywhere now.

Thanks!

I can't quite work out why you have two connectors there? The tap connector on the right should do it.

Most you will have to get is a new fibre washer or just put an iso valve on the pipe for now so at least you can get the rest of the water on. If you get stuck give me a bell. 07876484857. Cheers. Kev

cool will take it apart and have a proper look then, so far its just been do the minimal amount to it so I risk screwing it up the least

Thanks for the quick reply, the org is wonderful!

I think if you take the inner nut off & then just connect the outer one direct it should be OK.

Back, yup did just that removed the ridged one and as you say they are both threaded so I followed the advice, connected that one straight to it and no discernable leak, bucket placed in case it drips overnight but nothing evident so far. thanks Phoenix22, if you make it to a Border Patrol meet sometime I owe you a pint!

The two brass nuts...the one on the right is a compression nut, there will be an olive underneath this (or should be), the nut on the left will be the 1/2" tap connector.

You've either disturbed the olive or the fibre washer that seals on to the plastic thread, these are notorious for leaking as the plastic threads can be a bit pants.

Undo the right hand nut, either wrap some ptfe tape around the olive or cut it off carefully with a junior hacksaw and replace it.

Over tightening compression joints is a major DIY cause of leaks, just nip them up and check them, can always give them another eighth of a turn.

Edit, just spotted the sneaky little elbow joint (on my phone), so yeah it's already an elbow tap connector, they have probably added another for alignment issues or something.

thanks specialone, you missed out on the pint but you have helped prove what an awesome place this is

So far so good, still holding steady so shouldn't change now, it fits onto the plastic a whole lot better with just one but it likely was for alignment with the old one as it was pretty snug.

Looks like the ridged one used to have a washer inside but no trace of it found now, I guess it could've washed out what remained of it when I cracked it open a little bit before realising it wasn't plastic thread there.

Glad you got it sorted. Agree with the above, the extra nut looks like a spacer of some kind.
