Default New (to me) throttle bodies. What are these?

I've taken off my old throttle bodies to be replaced with some new, second hand ones, to try and diagnose the issues me and YorkieChris have found with the engine.

But anyway, the new throttle bodies have these black pipes coming off but they're capped off with little bung things.
The one taken off mine has only one of the 3 dangling ones capped off, why would the previous owner do this?
Pictures of the one taken off:

Thanks!
I've just finished putting them on. Put everything back together and now it doesn't start. The starter motor just turns.
The red 'FI' light just stares me in the face too.. (Stays lit. Not flashing) Any ideas? Need to get it started ASAP I need it for work tomorrow.

What was the problem in the first place? have they made a difference? Just asking because I'm having mine balanced on Tuesday.

Fuel consumption wasn't the best and it was really twitchy and rough in terms of power delivery.
It feels a hell of a lot cleaner and smoother, and as for fuel consumption, only time will tell. I'll keep you posted though.

I'm hoping to get these balanced again too. Will keep you posted.

Mine is just a bit lumpy at tick over and low end revs so first port of call is a full service which I've done today and the the TB balance!! well see what happen's.

In regards to your first post, are they not the vacuum take offs? the pipes may be to enable easier tb balancing?
