Rattle cans aren't that bad, people think they're **** because they go and buy cheap ones from halfrauds or online. These are **** because the nozzles aren't fanned and (especially halfrauds paint) they're thinned down too much so you get an extra 100ml and you think your getting a good deal. If you go to a proper paint shop they'll put it in a decent can with a decent nozzle and at a decent viscosity, ok you might be paying 3 quid more but its worth it.
In regards to how much you need, how long is a piece of string? Its not really practical to answer. If you're getting your paint in a tin then 1l will do a bike with some to spare for future. However don't try and make the comparison to rattle cans as tinned paint is very thick and thinned down before you put it in your gun so 1l will go a long way. Genrally I mix it down to about the consistency of double cream. You will **** it up so you'll need more than a litre, you'll need more primer than paint and the amount depends on what condition the panels are in. Lacquer, if you using two part (toxic, will mess you up bad so you need a respirator) then one coat is enough but again that bit will most likely go wrong or orange peel like. Don't underestimate spraying, it's not easy, requires patience and for the sprayer to be meticulous. If you're going to use rattle cans then don't bother as it will cost a fortune. Also in this current climate unless you have a well heated area to spray in then don't bother. Thd lacquer could condensate and go cloudy.

If you've never sprayed before my advice would be to completely sheet/plastic line the space you're working in and double lap the door way because the spray particles will suspend in the "spray zone" and anything in there WILL get painted. Also as soon as you open the door the particles rush out an again cover everything.
Get good breathing apparatus and consider anything you're wearing ruined for general use. |
