I know this issue has been covered a gazillion times but can't quite find the answer I'm looking for...
I've had an intermittent FI, bike not starting issue for a while. In the last couple of weeks it has got much worse and now the bike won't start. last week I cleaned the connections of the kill switch, starter switch and clutch switch (not yet checked the sidestand) which made no difference. Over the weekend I removed the fuel tank and front fairing as they needed painting after I dropped the bike the previous weekend. The bike ran fine for a week after the drop. I've installed a tail tidy, aftermarket rear indicators, and new clutch and brake levers while it was in pieces. (Not sure this is relevant but just wanted to give all the info). The lights all worked fine after I put it back together last night. However, it wouldn't start or turnover, all there was were two clicks (the injectors?) but no FI fault. The fuel tank wasn't empty but it was low so today I topped it up and after this it now turns over but I think then the FI fault started to show - previously the fault meant that it wouldn't even turn over. The headlights dip when you press the start button as well. I have tried to check the fuel pump relay using the instructions in the Haynes manual. I've connected a test light over terminals 2 and 3. With the ignition on there's no light. When the ignition turns on the light comes on for a second or two and then goes out. Then I tried to connect terminal 3 to the positive terminal of the battery and terminal 4 to the negative. This blew the fuse. I tried again and the same happened. Should this be happening, does it mean I'm doing something wrong or that the circuit is faulty? Does this indicate that the relay is faulty. (The test light I'm using is one of the bulbs from the rear indicator I removed, that should be OK as well right? Also the dash has now gone blank, is this on the same circuit as the blown fuse? I'm thinking this could be more than one issue but don't know where to go next ![]() |

if the bike is just clicking when pressing starter then it's usually a sign of a duff/low charge battery.
if you loose everything including lights, dash etc.etc then usually main fuse or green connector. if you get lights and dash but FI and intermittent prime then it's usually ignition switch. |

My K3 used to show the FI light after refuelling. I'd turn the ignition off, wait 30 seconds then it would start. One weekend I had the tank off & connected/disconnected & cleaned all electrical connectors. This worked and cleared the FI light, it never happened again.
Since doing your testing have you checked the main fuse? |

Thanks for the replies. I ride it pretty much every day so don't think it's the battery, plus it's now started turning over.
All the other fuses are fine, I've just blown the fuel pump fuse by trying to test the relay.. |

Are you getting no power to dash at all... or is there lights and dash but no turning over.. are you getting a fuel pump sound?
As Bibio says re the likely culprits although intermittent faults are inherently trickier to diagnose. My problem was lights and dash on but broken/stuttering fuel pump noise, no turnover, and FI showing. Many things checked but the winner so far has been the (annoyingly simple) heavy blast of contact cleaner into the ignition followed by some graphite lock lube. |

Backlight is there on the dash but no display, plus lights are on and neutral light is on etc so guessing the dash is to do with the blown fuse?
I guess my question is more around if I'm doing the check of the fuel pump relay right and if that should be shorting the fuse? |

I think I drained the battery trying to turn it over too many times, I've left it on charge from last night so hopefully the dash will be back then this evening...

So.. Plugged the fuel pump in and it started ... Check the basics! Still have the intermittent issue to identify though. Thanks for the replies guys
