Default Pointy unused for two years - what to do?

Hello to you all,

I'm new to Suzuki's (was a Honda man), to the site and this is my first post here.

I've just bought a '04 Sv650s for £200 which had been standing for nearly 2yrs. I've scanned the forum to get a general feeling of the bike and some of it's 'character' and not to mention issues. The problem I have is that it is in an underground carpark in London so I'm limited to what I can do but with the need to do the minimum possible to get it transportable (even MOT'able locally) so I can ride it home.

I would be very grateful if someone could give me a more focused check list (hand holding) on which SV issues that need particular attention.

I have a couple of obvious issue the left hand disk is loose and rattles badly when kicked/touched. would this get sorted if I clened the bobbins? and the throttle sticks any good cable lube cleaning products out there?

Obviously I'm going to do the usual:-
New Battery
Oil down bores, slowly rotate engine by hand etc
Plugs
Oil Filter Change
check air filter
General lubing up
I would like if possible to pop the calipers off, slightly push out pistons and clean around without a bleed down, and slightly roughen up pads.

Do you have any other ideas

Thanks in advance
Matt

I'd first of all get it running then run it round the carpark for 10 mins to get it warmed up, then check everything over. Some things will just need use to free them up, but once the engine is warm and the brakes have seen some use, you'll have a better idea of what actually needs doing vs doing a pile of work that may not need doing.

MOT items will be the usual. Brake efficiency, tyres, indicators, stop lights, lights, horn, footpeg rubbers, worn bearings etc.
It's injected so i would expect no issues with starting. Get some fresh fuel in there too, at least a gallon of super unleaded...it'll help

Start with a fuel change. It won't be good if two years old and likely to cause more trouble than it is worth.

turn it over with spark plug caps removed just to circulate a bit of oil, ensuring it has some in the first place.

Then whilst you are still in the nice private car park, start, ride bed brakes and fix if necassary

As has been said change the fuel as best you can (not actually that easy) without taking the whole thing to bits. Just siphon out what you can and refill with fresh stuff should be good enough. Provided the brakes release then no problem riding it around the car park to warm up the oil before you drop it out, and a "rattle" on a disc it's unusual, but if it's proper lose it is.

By the way, two years is nothing. I got one of my bikes out yesterday that hadn't turned a wheel in eight years, put new fuel in it and rode it straight down for it's MOT test. Does help if it's been stored in a dry garage though.....

Thanks for the replies

Yeah I'd forgotten about the fuel - do these beasts have any form of floats or fuel filter - I'm presuming it's just a normal FI with a pump y/n

I think ..."and a "rattle" on a disc it's unusual, but if it's proper lose it is. " has the ending missed off whats the rest of the sentance?

After looking through YouTube (look for cleaning disk/rotor and bobbin/buttons) since posting the disk rattle is fixable (in theory) without having to buy a new disk automatically

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qoPqN2GBdw
http://www.thediscdoctor.co.uk/Bobbins.htm

Again, looking through this forum there's mention of the rear caliper being a bitch to remove and pretty much certain being seized - is it worth getting a kit automatically and replacement pins(s) how many???

Matt

The fuel pump on a pointy is inside the fuel tank, so no filters that you can get at without stripping it.

The rest of the sentence is that if it's proper lose it's unusual..... my mistake, I meant to say a rattle is usual!

Check the brake out first, if the wheel turns freely and then stops when you put the brake on, but then spins again easily when you release it no problem. If it doesn't release cleanly then you'll need to strip and lubricate everything. Same procedure front or back.

If not hire a trailer, or get a motorcycle delivery firm to get it to your place.
