Hi all,
I've recently purchased my first motorbike, a 2004 SV650. I'm a complete newbie to the biking world so have very little knowledge at the moment so apologies for any stupid questions I might ask ![]() The first question I have is how can you differentiate between a K3 and K4 model? My bike is a 2004 model but it is silver. From what I have read only the K3 model came in silver. I have done quiet a bit of searching but yet to find a definitive answer, so hopefully someone might be able to give me a straight answer. Next question I have is regarding restriction. My license requires me to restrict the bike to 49bhp. I know there are 33bhp ecu's but have not come across any 49bhp ecu's. Are they available? I know you can mechanically restrict them but my preference would be the ecu. Would I even notice a difference between the 33bhp ecu and 49bhp restriction kit with the way each method would have a different delivery of power? Are K3 and K4 ecu's / restrictor kits interchangeable or will I need to find one that is specific to whatever model I have? The final thing which I'm a bit confused about as I'm hearing contradicting stories is, what's the story with restriction certs. What ever way I decide to restrict the bike, I would be more than capable of installing the restrictor myself so would not like to have to payout a couple of hundred for a piece of paper. Are you obliged by law to have one? In my opinion they are a worthless piece of paper as they proof nothing, the bike can always be easily unrestricted. If the insurer or police had any doubts that the bike was unrestricted, I highly doubt the piece of paper would convince them otherwise. Cheers ![]() |

The 33bhp ECU is the only one available, unfortunately the 49bhp restriction is mechanical only. You are not required by law to have a certificate so go ahead and do it yourself. Some insurance companies MAY ask for proof, but MOST will accept a dyno print out. You can just factor that into the cost of the premium if they ask for proof. If the police suspect that you are not restricted the certificate is as worthless as you think, they will dyno the bike themselves if they feel it necessary. Where abouts are you based?

This should help you with the model year, http://www.suzukicycles.org/SV-serie...0-SV650S.shtml if the look carefully at the black panel under the riders seat you will see the shape change between the 2003 and 2004 model, as a heads up this means that only K3 seats will fit on K3 bikes.
