Default Original SV chain life?

Hi folks, what mileage would I expect to see out of an original chain on the sv.

If you rag it everywhere and have never cleaned or oiled about 5-6 k. Always oiled with a scottoiler and had an easy life, 25-30k?

Default Original chain life

Cheers. Do clean it regularly and re oil every 600 or so miles and riding is mixed consisting of 70-80 percent not ragging as I have the wife on the back. Then I have the occasional blasts on my own. Just noticed tonight that as I turn my wheel the chain rides higher and lower as I turn through 360 degrees. It's due a clean or is it a gonna.

Check for tight links. I think 5 and its an mot failure. Sometimes can recover them if you keep it really well lubed. May also just need adjusting.

Sounds like it's stretched. You may have adjusted it too tight at some point. Sorry if you know this but the distance between the sprockets changes as the swingarm moves which is why you always leave some slack.

I've got it wrong more than once and ruined a good chain. I tend to err on the side of caution these days and run a bit slack.

I got 20k plus on both my SV's using a scottoiler and even then it was the sprockets that wore out.

I've just changed the VFR at 21k but I wasn't responsible for the first 18k. In this case the chain was kaput and the sprockets fine but I changed both. I fitted a scottoiler to the VFR too so the new chain will benefit from that.

Prior to using scottoilers I was lucky to get 12k.

Chain life depends very much on how well lubed it is.I got about 30000 miles out of the original on a curvy, but I oiled it with old engine oil much more often than 600 miles.I never cleaned it or put gunk or parafin anywhere near it.I reckon a scottoiler would give another 5000 miles on top of that.

Tell that t'yungstas nowadays and they wont believe yer.

That's the secret I think. You have to be very disciplined when it comes to chain maintenance.

riding style also has a lot do do with wear on consumables, crack the throttle open everywhere and you will go threw more, be a bit more gentle, plan ahead and they will last longer.

Currently on 26000 miles with original chain and Scottoiler, loads left in the chain, sprockets are worn - think they'll go first.

Yep my gearbox looked like a circular saw when it came off at that mileage.
