Afternoon,
I removed my throttle side bar end last night to sort out my loose throttle grip (the glue had perished). Upon trying to refit the bar end, the thread on the (particularly long...say 3-4 inches) bolt wouldn't catch on anything and screw into place. Any ideas on this? I forgot to take a picture of the bolt but it's longer than anything I've seen on a normal bike before!

Actually, it's this long - but imagine it not being snapped as in the picture

Sound like you have probably dropped the expanding washer that the bolt screws into inside the handlebars?
I have done that (more than once) and fished it out with a tool finder (magnet on stick). Attached is a pic of the bits you should have. |

Bugger, that sucks! Wouldn't have thought it'd come away like that, rather being fixed in place. Off to Halfords for a tool finder it is then!
Although having said that, isn't the handlebar the same diameter all the way through? I'm wondering how this has happened in the first place as the smaller end that the bolt goes into surely must be locked in place?

Once you unscrew the bolt, the washer is not expanded and is smaller than the handlebar width and so falls in. In hindsight, the key is not to unscrew the bolt the whole way out of the washer.

I use something similar to this with my bar ends. Keeps them firmly in place and have never had one work loose.
Just use your original screw/bolt. http://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-r...ack-of-5/57310 |

Umm, no. Completely normal design for bar ends fitted to tubular handlebars - as found on umpteen motorcycles one might encounter.

"Umm"? Are you Brittney Spears?
Yeah, the way it can sink down into the handlebar is epic engineering. DEAD easy to get out as well when the rubber grommet sat in front of the nut that the bolt winds into can't be budged, either.

Thanks matey, screwfix all of 20 yards away from me as well so will buy some tonight. Made a bodge workaround last night but would rather it stay put completely.
