Default leaking engine case..

Hi,

Had a slight leak on my 02 sv since i went away to france last june, been putting it off till winter time as I've been told and looks like the alternator cover gasket. So, about 2 weeks ago I've finally got round to replacing the gasket and spent a good few hours scraping the original off with a stanley blade. However, its still leaking a tiny bit, any reason why? Its not by much and not as bad as originally however I want it sold soon and want it to be spot on. I've torqued the bolts up evenly and to the correct setting, it still looks to be from near the sprocket cover on the alternator cover. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe you could try the belt and braces approach, try a small amount of sealant on the gasket, I all ways take this approach on water pumps and alike, it was what my dad taught me and has served me well, even a simple film of grease on the gasket can help seal a weep, take care of which grease you use on a rubber gasket tho.

Are you sure there is a leak? You mention the sprocket cover and I would make sure that the oil is not just that which is being flung from the front sprocket, especially as you noticed it on a long trip to a warmer place. I get this when the collected fling can warm up and drip off. Just a thought.

Cheers for the replies its much appreciated, I cleaned the cover and the chains not too wet so I dont think it would be and its definitely engine oil unfortunately. I may have to try and remove the casing again and put some sealant on if I have to. Just want it to be fine to be able to sell it but its resisting!
