Default Missfire?

Hey all
Im having a bit of trouble with my 650s 2000
It doesnt like being reved high in first gear. It runs realy lumpy and the progression through the revs isnt smooth at all.
It only does it in first gear. Could it be a missfire problem?
Cheers
Ian

Without knowing how many miles, how long you've had it, is it serviced well etc... sounds to me like carbs need some TLC.

Spanner Man where are you

He should be round soon

PS, welcome to the org

I bought it about 2 months ago off my aunti
She got it brand new and only put 2500 miles on it in the 7 years she owned it. So as you can imagine its been sat in a garage for a while gathering dust. lol

I drained the float chambers when i first got it because there was water in the fuel tank. It did run ok after that

Its ok in 2nd, the power is realy smooth. Its just in 1st its realy lumpy and feels like its struggling
Cheers for the welcome also

Ian

Bump

Spanner Man, me thinks with 2500 miles in 7 years it can only be carb problems with the problems described.

See if there is a pair for sale in the for sale section. If you can get a pair with a good amount of consistant miles on them and don't spend too much it may sort it.

At best the carbs you have with so little miles need a good strip down. If you fancy that go for it.

Not a hard job to do, just remember to work on one at once so a) you dont mix any bits up and b) you have something to refer to if you can't remember where one of those jetty-bits goes

I'd start with the simple stuff. Before I waded in for a full on carb strip.

Have you checked

Spark Plugs and you've tried a full tank of new fresh fuel ?
Is the air filter clean or is it filled up with gunk and dirt.
What are the throttle cables like, is the throttle action smooth or is it stiff / jerky
Does the choke lever move smoothly or is that stiff.

Sounds to me like you've got a problem with idle / pick up off the throttle, yes it might be gunk in the carbs, but it could be the choke cables stuck or the choke plungers are stuck in the carb barrels and are'nt free to move.

I had awful rough idle and rubbish throttle response when my choke got stuck on. I'd be looking at that and maybe getting the carb's balanced to, But the others are right, a carb strip and clean is going to at least let you find out exactly what the problem is.

I dont know how big a job it is as I've never done it so cant really help there.

Tank off, carbs off.

Then about an hour each carb, cover the lot in "gunk" then rinse off, pull the slides out, float chambers off, jets out, not forgetting the pilot needle as thats got an Oring and will be knackered by use of carb cleaner. Then check theres nothing plastic left, spray carb cleaner through everything, clean it off with compressed air. Reassemble.
Really not a hard job, but an impact driver to get the float bowl screws out can be useful, the front ones do tend to sieze in and can be rounded easily.

Hi mate
Checked all those and their fine.
Ive put about just over 1000 miles on it since i bought it. So its had quite abit of fule through it.
Im thinkin there could still be water in the fuel, so im gonna drain the float chambers again see if that helps. If not i'll try draining the tank and fuel filter.
If that fails i'll be learning how carbs work
(Dont be surprised if theres a post on here in the next few days with the title "Help! I cant put my carbs back together!" )
lol
Cheers for the help guys
