SOMEBODY must be able to diagnose this.. (SV's about to be thrown into a lake)

Ok so following on from previously.
Bike had been sat in the garage for a long time. Started fine with no issues. Took it to its MOT and it had to be bump started. This happened another couple of times. Assuming it was a knackered battery this was replaced... No joy! Only this time the starter relay was fluttering and a fuse had blown. Relay and fuses replaced. This time the ignition was dead (nothing happening when key turned at all) relocated earth thinking it was this... No joy. And on checking voltmeter it's definitely earthed!
Perhaps a dodgy battery? Tried on another that's definitely good (off friends bike)
Now ignition came on, fuel pump purred and all looked sweet. Hit the starter and FI light on and 'chec' appears... Now the ignition still lights up (no FI light or 'chec' any more) but the fuel pump doesn't make any noise and bike won't even try to turn over or anything.
Green connector was checked at the first point of trouble anticipating this but it's all ship shape and shiny.

Im really not technically minded and praying it's something simple. Anyone have ANY idea what might be causing the problem...?

had similar problems of late. turned out to be a reg/rec connector was furred up. a clean and electrical grease later and has been perfecto.

symptoms:
would just die and not start and would just give a 'click' on the solenoid.
when it would start it was running like it had water in the tank.
battery was only getting 12v at 5k revs charging voltage.
FI and CHECK would come up on dash.

Am I right in thinking its behind the rear fairing and easy to do? (2004 model here)

fairly easy. it requires you to take the airbox out and coil off for easy access as the connector is a PITA to get at otherwise. sitting on the bike its on the right hand side bolted to the frame. you need to inspect the connectors coming off the reg/rec and you might as well inspect the ones behind the left hand rear plastics as well.

its easier to take things off to gain full access rather then guddle about especially if you need to clean or replace the connector.

Ok cheers mate. So am I right in thinking its around the same location as the green connector? (Typical I've put all of the front of the bike together )

no its under the airbox roughly at the coil

Smacks a bit of grotty conections - electrical gremlins that come and go. You only need a small contact area on each connection for it to work, but that also means that just a bit more grot and it stops working. Or a disturbed connector cleans up just a little and it starts working again. Same goes for chafed wires.
