Default luggage dilemma

Hi everyone, I'm new to biking and having recently passed my test I bought a gladius 650.

This didn't have any luggage included so I wanted to know what the general consensus is on what would be best.

I'd probably need a top box but does this need some sort of fitting kit?

Additionally, where is best to buy the equipment?

Thank you

James

You will need a fitting a fitting kit for a topbox.

There are lots of makes out there Givi are a good option that do different types of top box. They have a sister company called Kappa that do a very similar range at cheaper prices.

I bought my Givi toolbox from a German company through eBay and it was half price.

There are also companies like Hepco and Becker that do luggage ranges.

If you need anything in the way of backpack or luggage bags that can clip onto rear seat etc check out Kriega. Will last you years with next to no wear, fully waterproof and inter lockable to provide various options with multiple bags.

Moved to bike talk as seems like a general "I need help with luggage" rather than a request for anything specific....

I have a top box fitted (Givi Monokey), which will take a crash helmet and gloves, but struggles to fit my rain jacket in too, so I've bought some Richa throw over panniers which hold my spare gloves and rain jacket, with room for more on each side if needed. They are supposed to be waterproof, but I've wrapped my stuff in carrier bags inside just in case!

Givi top box needs a frame and adaptor plate to fit it, I'm not sure you can buy or make a rear seat version like you can with Sv's as I'm not sure what sort of seat a Gladius has.

[edit] Can't remember how much the top box cost, but the panniers were £60 and seem to fit quite securely

It does depend on what you need the luggage for. If you need semi permanent luggage that is half secure (there is nothing that can't be popped open with a screwdriver) then hard luggage is worth having, and a top box has it's uses if you commute a lot and just need somewhere to keep some day clothes and a pair of shoes dry..... but for just running about and the odd holiday then soft luggage is a much cheaper and more flexible alternative.

I've never bothered with any kind of hard luggage, I have a decent magnetic tank bag for everyday use and a combination of throw over panniers and a back pack for when I go away.
