Is this possible? We have an old old house and everywhere the water goes there is the possibility of mould etc. if the water sits for any length of time. Never had this in any other house. Anyone know much about what could be done? I know tap water isn't sterile but I think it's the house internal piping that isn't so clean.

If you have doubts it can be chlorinated.
I would strongly suggest using a company that can issue a UKAS accredited certificate at the end of the work to give peace of mind that there is nothing left living in the pipework. The requirements are that the system must filled with chlorinated water to not less than 50mg/l and allowed to stand for 1 hour. Following which the level of chlorine is recorded, the chlorinated water flushed out until the chlorine residual has returned the original background level of the feed water and the pipe refilled. After standing for 30 minutes a sample is taken and on-site tests are undertaken. The pipework must be disinfected with a ‘hypochlorite’ solution’. Your local water company might be able to point in the direction of a water safety company, but I wouldn't hold your breath, it might be worth speaking to a plumber, but I would insist on the UKAS certificate to prove Total Viable Count and Coliform count. It would be a shame to spend money and then not be able to prove it worked just to save a few quid. |
