Default 03 sv650 Throttle Issue.

I bought an 03 sv650 off Craigslist in july for my first bike when I bought it the bike seemed fast but now that I am comfortable with it it seems sluggish.

I am not sure if there is a real issue or if my perception of it has changed.

The things that concern me the most is I can't rev the bike past around 7k rpm and if i twist the throttle all the way the bike actualy slows down and it feels like the back wheel chugs (I am not sure how to describe it properly)

I am not sure if I have some sort of fuel issue or if the bike is restricted I would like to hear what you guys think.

Hi and welcome.

Your bike does have a problem but it's hard to say exactly what it might be. The best starting point is to look at ALL the service items (oil, oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, air filter, valve clearances, throttle position sensor, throttle body balance, etc) and make sure they are all as they should be.

Have you had the bike serviced by a mechanic, or have you done any work on it yourself? Do you have any warning lights or the "CHEC" symbol on the dash?

It could be something really simple, like a scrap of plastic bag stuck in the airbox intake snorkel (ask me how I know that this can be a problem ) to something more complex like a blocked fuel filter.

Check all the service items first, and let us know - we will help as much as we can.

Is it an 03 Pointy model or the last of the carb Curvy ones on an 03 plate?

If it's carbed, I'd suspect restricted fuel intake, often caused by water in the fuel. It builds up in the carb jets. As you open the throttle more, you get more air but no more fuel so it cuts out.

Could also be fuel "varnish" build up in the carbs. Garages can normally get these cleaned out with some kind of sonic treatment. Not cheap though.

My injected K3 is just starting to do this very slightly, but it needs some serious attention anyway. No idea of the cause on injected bikes.

I changed the oil and filter last week just replaced the dirty air filter about 2 hours ago bike runs smother but still has the same problems. I flushed the radiator when i got it and then again probably 3 months ago. Right now i am waiting for the bike to cool before i get to the spark plugs.

I've done all the work myself because all the bike mechanics in my area are a little sketch and I am no expert but all the work I can do myself. Also no chec symbol.

Did it do it before you did any servicing?

When I first purchased the bike I did all the basics I bled the brakes changed the oil filter and oil and flushed the coolant thats about it. It seemed fine however it was when I first started riding so anything to me seemed fine. When I got comfortable riding and opening it up is when I noticed the issue so I am not sure when it really started.
