Tyre/screw advice

I think I've been very lucky - as I was arriving home tonight, I heard a semi-rhythmic flopping noise. Here was the cause:



It's a 40mm screw, almost exactly half of it embedded in my rear tyre. I unscrewed it, and it came out completely straight. Given the angle, to me it looks like it's just gone through the outer rubber. Tyre was at the correct pressure, and I'll check again tomorrow morning.

Should I worry about it? I do a fair amount of motorway speed, and really don't want it to blow!

If it wuz me I would change the tyre.
Even if the carcass hasn't been punctured, the rubber now has a cut in it and that's never good.
You would've been better with it going straight through imo.

Thank you, although please don't be offended if I hold out for the advice I was hoping for

It does 'look' like it just goes through the outside rubber,ie if you got down to minimum tread depth the damage would probably have disappeared.
If it was me,i would try and convince myself of this for a few sleepless nights,then buy a new tire-sorry, that's also what you don't want to hear.

Personally I think I'd plug it and not worry about it (especially if there is no sign of any air loss, including during the plugging procedure). Tyre plugging kit here for £6:

Or you could see about getting it professionally repaired (patched or plug/patched for maybe £25? - although looking at the pictures I think they would probably say the damage is too close to the sidewall to be able to patch it inside)

Either way, it would be worth seeking the opinion of a tyre professional. (which would be my actual advice, anything else you do at your own risk)

I believe that an actual blowout (very rapid airloss) is fairly unheard of with tubeless motorcycle tyres, should there be any airloss it would tend to be more gradual, at least where nail/screw type tread damage is concerned.

Blowouts with tubed tyres were more common which is why tubeless tyres largely replaced them.

Yup - no bubbles. The tyre pressure dropped over night, which surprised me, until I remembered the tyres were hot yesterday.

As painful as it is to lose a good tyre riding a Motorcycle is dangerous enough without adding to it.We only have two small patches of rubber keeping us from the Grave and my life is worth more than the cost of a new tyre.

Could try immersing the affected area in your bath (if you have one). Probably easier if you take the wheel out of your SV first though
