Nah. IMO better to protect it well and wash it infrequently than wash it daily and not protect it. Coat of hard wax, ACF50 or Scottoiler FS365 on everything but the brakes, lovely. Mine gets washed maybe once a fortnight through the winter, or if it's looking particularily filthy, and there's not a spot of rust on any of the original parts. (some on some of the bits I got used, like the rear swingarm...) Maybe consider a Chewy stainless bolt kit as well.

a mechanic told me the other day, its best to not wash your bike at all over the winter period, as when you wash it, it leaves your bike bear for attack, whereas, a healthy layer of roaf cr*p will help protect it.

mabe he was having a giggle with me . . . i dunno.

The only really prone bits are....

Caliper seizure, especially the back on curvy's.
Torque arm, rusts in the drain holes.
Subframe, drain holes again.
All those engine bolts with the chrome heads.
Fork lowers, once the laquer begins to lift.
Flakey engine paint on early models where they get pinged by stones.

Have I missed anything?

Mine lives in the shed, unwashed too often, but little winter use once the salt arrives. Did use it one winter, never again as there's way too much salt on these roads.

yes they do. I use the scottoiler stuff normally, I used to wash it off everyday in the winter and it still rots. Trouble is that it was left outside at work for 11 hours so by the time I get to wash it the rot has started already.

There is absolutely no chance of my SV getting washed on a daily basis. It'll be lucky to get washed on a weekly basis! Hmm, I guess I better clean it soon, otherwise its going to be a once a month thing.

Just give the fork legs a wipe every day. Other than that, protect it with the said products ^^^ or WD40, and give it a claen once a week. No matter what you do you will never stop the rot, sadly its the nature of metal....baby its born to ruuuuust (Sung in the style of Bruce sprinstein!!)
