Default Clutch Problem

Hi,

I have been having a problem selecting gears on the bike now for about a month or so. It has got progressively worse over the past month which I have solved by adjusting the clutch at the lever. However, I have run out cable to adjust. I have some questions:

1) Is it just the cable that is the problem? When I first start the bike up it is not to bad but after a couple of mins it is very clunky changing gear and when I stop it is virtually impossible to select nuetral.

2) If it is just the cable how difficult is it to replace myself? (Couldn't find any how too's?)

3) Could this be something more serious i.e. gear box?

I am pretty sure that it is not the clutch itself because it is not slipping.

Sorry if this is a lame feed but I would like a second opinion. Also, I like to turn up to the garage with a bit of knowledge about such issues so as not to be considered an ammetor.

Cheers!

You need to adjust the clutch lifter at the lower end of the clutch cable, it should be adjusted so that it makes an equal angle above and below 90° to the cable when the lever is all the way out and all the way back to the bar.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch on the side of the engine?? And is your chain at the correct tenion? Is your gear level bent??

just things to think about, but i don't think it would be your gear box. Hope this helps.

yep chain could be the problem. Also I have read on a different thread on here somewhere that if you overfill with oil it will cause that to. Somebody else also said about making sure that there is no gunk around the gear lever try giving it a good squirt with WD40 or something similar and giving it all a good clean up

My SV is difficult to find neutral on to, but its always been like that I guess its a "feature"

Good luck hope you sort it

Cheers Lads,

I will have a look tonight when I get in. I didn't think about adjusting the cable at both ends. Will also check the chain although I usually check it every now and then and should be OK.

I will let you know.

Cheers

Try all the simple things first- clutch cable (correct adjustment and lubrication), Chain (adjustment and lubrication again), gear lever and linkage (adjustment and lubrication, free movement?), Change the engine oil and filter.

If you do all this and it still isnt any better then its time to go to a mechanic-but at least you wont feel an idiot when the mechanic tells you its something simple and then charges you for the privalage.

Best of luck mate. Dan

I've just had exactly the same problem that you dewscribe. The shop where I got the bike (under gurantee) adjusted the cable / clutch at the clutch side and it's now ultra smoth, and nuetral is very easy to select... Just watch out for when you pull off the biting point may have moved dramatically!
