My '99 SV has just started making a strange noise - thoughts are that it might be the cam chain tensioners that need replacing, but I thought I'd ask for some advice first.
Bike has 45,000 km on the clock and noise sounds like something is loose and vibrating - quite a loud buzz, Really only happens at 3000-3500 rpm on the road. Can't reproduce on the paddock stand in the drive - even in third gear dragging the rear brake to load up the engine. Have taken off the fairings so its not that, and I cannot find anything else that's loose. Only thing that's that's been done recently is oil change, and oil level is OK. Noise isn't just the normal 'ticking', I'ne had the bike from nearly new and this is a new one for me. |

Imagine how noisy mine is at 80000km's, Thought it was the tensioners from reading these forums. Replaced both at quite a cost to find that they make no difference, I then put manual adjusters in and they make no difference as well.
So the camchains themselves must be stuffed. Have spoken to sv owners who have replaced chains at about your milage, Which i can't afford so am trying to ignore the rattles. |

My bike had 49000k's when it developed a noise when the engine was under load, it couldn't be reproduced whilst on its stand either. If you are able to turn the noise on and off using the throttle, then it could mean your small end bearings are starting to go, this is what happened to mine.
Not such good news as this means you are up for a bit of a rebuild, $$$$$$$$$$ ! I had gone through the usual cam chain/tensioner route too but decided that the $2500 I was quoted for the fix was on the pricey side and went for the trade in instead. Sorry.....I'm sure you don't need to hear that, but it might be worth investigating. I was also told that the bearings could last for perhaps another 100000kms without breaking, but I didn't want to push my luck. Hope that your problem is solved easily. Cheers Frosty ![]() |

Thanks. Hope it isn't the bearings, but I'll check the tensioners first and see where that takes me
