Hi lads/lasses, reference the track days we have spoken about, can anyone advise the type of gear you are required to wear e.g.,
I think you can wear two-piece leathers as long as they are zipped together and I think your lid needs to be ACU approved (i.e. gold label on it). Can anyone advise on the above, also what type of gloves and boots etc are acceptable, also anything else that I would need to be aware of. Any help appreciated. Cheers Scooby2102 |

From what I can remember two piece leather s are only allowed on most tracks if they zip together completely round the waist rather than those that just zip up at the small of your back.
Boots - yeah you can go the whole hog and fork out for those with toe sliders etc on, but they aren't a requirement. Just good strong boots in decent nick. Gloves - again, leather and in decent condition. I'm sticking with my normal gloves which have carbon knuckle protectors etc on, but that's not really a requirement, more a chioce. (They are the most comfortable gloves I've found for my little hands anyway!) I haven't seen anything regarding helmets, I'm guessing that if it's 'road legal' it's track legal with regard to minimum protection standards. If it looks like it's taken a knock I would have thought they'd be sceptical though. I'm considering saving up for a new pair of Sidi Vertebra for track use only... I already have a pair of Sidi's anyway, I just know I'm gonna end up sliding on my **** into the kitty litter so don't want to trash my regular gear! ![]() |

As for boots and gloves they just need to be in good condition. However, I went through my SIDI sliders, through the leather and on to the side protection on my SIDI's in one track day so I reckon sliders are pretty important. Got a new rearset now to alleviate the lower pegs. So not wear titanium knee or toe sliders as it cuts up the track and is therefore banned. If you get your knee down you'll just wear the velcro out where you slider should be if you have them taken away!. Leathers need to zip all the way round (3/4?) or one piece and have no tears or rips - scuffs are OK, in fact most people there have scuffy leathers - they are the regulars! If you have a back protector, wear it. Both my mates were saved from possibke injury wearing theirs, those rumble strips are more jagged in places than you might think.

and then there's Knockhill which doesn't go for the same level of safety!!!
at the trackday last year my jacket and jeans (leather) did not have a zip together and they didn't mind. infact there was no scrutineering of kit or bikes at all, some people even wore textile jackets!!! I'd recomend full kit as above though. |

I have to admit that Im slightly concerned about track day safety... unfortunately Im not of the svelte figure I used to be and when I tried on a set of one piece leathers a) I didn't feel totally comfortable and b) yes I did look silly with my beer tank sticking out... I know its for safety and that should be the prime reason for buying them but the look does come into it and I'll debate that point all day with anyone... however I did buy a 2 piece set that only zips at the back for about a foot in length. Now being new to biking and having 2 cars, a house, wife and dog to support I havent got that much money spare to go around buying new gear all the time and spending loads on my machine, much as Id like to. So track days could be a bit of a bind to me as Im not appropriately clothed - I have got a textile jacket but its been said that I cant wear that - as much as I like it and believe that its actually got better armour than my leather jacket !!

I'd suggest taking a look at either your jacket or trousers, and one or t'other may also have a full zip as well as the smaller one at the back.
If so then this means they (whatever company it is) makes a 'track' version. So you'd then only need to buy half a suit so to speak. I was going to do this as both my regular jacket (RST) and trousers (HG) have a full zip (which does attach to each other!). But both are also a mix of textile and leather so weren't suitable anyway. |
