Hi,
I’ve already read that at least one of you got through the winter on the new SV (fuel-injection) without too many problems. I am thinking about buying the new SV, hoping that this bike will run better in winter. I knew about the problems before I bought my 2002 model, thinking it could be solved. Unfortunately my bike (carb-heater, fender extender, no water in the tank, etc. etc.) thinks differently. Below 7°C, (after parking outside at work) it runs on one cylinder, the exhaust seems to explode, rpm´s dropping to zero while downshifting and engine stalling or cutting out etc. It means I leave the SV at home under certain weather conditions which aren’t that extreme. So I’ve decided it has to go. I would like to know if there are more people who drive the new SV through the winter and if they experienced any (other) problems so far. Thanks. |

I rode mine (K2) in jan and feb and did not seem to have any problems at all. Even on some of the days that were realy icy, comming to my bike all covered in snow it started first time.
I have my temp sensor pushed out from under the frame, which probably helps with it thinking its colder and turn the carb heaters on.

Fortunately the newer models don't suffer anywhere near as badly as the older ones do, as far as I'm aware no-one has as yet reported the fuel injected models giving any of the low temperature troubles that the carbed ones have suffered, the only possible problem area is that of rain-water getting into the front plug cap and causing a misfire/cutting out, but that said they don't seem to suffer anywhere nearly as much, and of course the front mudguard extender solves that anyway, and keeps your bike a little cleaner.

The FI models perform perfectly in cold weather and I've had no problems at all in wet weather.
I felt the need to turn the idle speed up slightly, but that's the only thing. |

I've not had any mechanical problems yet but then I think the weather has not been too bad in London this winter. My bike stays outside but I do cover it and I do use a fair bit of WD40 and Scottoiler FS365. The only thing I've had a problem with is keeping the SV clean, my hugger especially can't go more than 20 miles without getting covered in dirt.
The only thing about my SV that is wierd is that it seems to have a gremlin in the ECU which causes it to "reboot". If I start the bike up and shift into 1st gear, it stalls, which it's supposed to do with the side stand down. But now if I flick the side stand up and pull the clutch in and try to start it up in 1st, sometimes all the lights go out and then my bike just seems to 'reboot'. Now if I try to start it once it's 'rebooted' in 1st it fires up no problem. |

mine was fine for starting but as soon as i got up to speed in the cold it wouldnt tick over. it used to get to junction and had to keep the throttle slightly open. when it was in motion it never missed a beat. cheers. jamie

Thanks for the reactions so far. I'm sorry I didn't react sooner. Had trouble getting on the website. Maybe at least I can also try to move the sensor and see if it makes any difference. Still have one winter to go before I possibly buy a new SV or other motorcycle (have to save some money first). Braking, keeping the throttle open and pulling the clutch in all at the same time if you need to stop to try to keep the bike running isn't funny in rush hour. Almost need an extra pair of hands.
I'll keep all this in mind. At least it sounds promising. I think the rebooting is something you can get used to. It seems minor in comparison. And I have no intentions to ride the bike in extreme (frosty slippery roads) weatherconditions. I have limits too you know, but anything above 0°C should be possible and at this moment it isn't. Thanks again. |

I only suffered with carb icing slightly over a period of a couple of weeks this winter JUST PASSED. The only other thing that happened due to the weather was that I had a bit of condensation build up in the carbs. Was about to drain the carbs when it eventually ran through and started running fine again.
I used the higher grade fuel and and think that kept a lot of the ice carbing at bay. And on another note, I just serviced the bike and changed the plugs. Having used the bike all the way through the winter I was pleasantly surprised to find that the front plug was completely clean and not one sign of any rust what so ever. In fact it was in such good condition I could have put it back in and carried on using it. This is all thanks to the extender fender that I fitted just before the winter. |

Like BigApe I've only had a little carb icing and that's it. A fen ext solves the front plug problem (though I've never had that problem yet).
I was out in th recent ice/snow slithering down the back lane and it didn't pose much problem. Idle was slightly down but once engine warm it was fine. Have you done any engine mods wich could be making engine run lean? |
