Default running in question

K5 arrived last night but the dealer forgot to leave the owners manual. I know I need to go steady for the first 500 mile, does anyone know what rpm I should keep it under?

cheers

Phil

PS Where can I get a decent numberplate tidy from?

Suzuki advise to keep the bike under 5000rpm for the first 500 miles. Avoid long trips, especially motorway type riding where the engine will be at constant revs for a longer period of time.

What you're aiming to do is gradually warm the engine up... then let it cool down, warm up again, cool down - and so on.

There's lots of chat on here about not taking too much notice of the limits, especially after the first few hundred miles. However I expect that most people played it fairly safe. However... take it very easy initially, and probably all the way up to your run-in service at 500 miles. The oil and filter will then be changed, and you'll get rid of all the dirt that was a result of running it in - and then you can gradually start to push things more and more.

Thanks for that Bill - I've run bikes in before (got a gixer thou, and had a 600), but just wasn't sure of the exact details. As you say, there are different opinions on how to run it in, although I've always done it by the book, gently up and down the gears and had good results when they've subsequently been dyno'd.

not just heat cycles, but also load cycles ( up & down the gears/ start stop, all within the rev range allowed) town/traffic riding is good for this.

Cheers Mark.

What he said, although covering 500 miles around town seems to take forever when your itching to be able to open the throttle fully.

I wouldn't go along with the hot/cold bit. The ideal is to do it all in one go.

Main thing is treat the break-in as a continual process, not before/after first service.

Important thing is keep engine speed down (5k recommended by Suzy) for the first 100mls say (couple of hours, that's when the bedding is at the fastest rate) then gradually build up the revs a bit at small throttle openings, low gears for example, and gradually use more throttle at low/mid revs.

Sliding speed between rings and bores is what generates local friction and if you rev too much too soon it's possible to get micro-welding and tearing of the surfaces. Keeping to brief spells at higher revs allows the surface temps to even out again. Gas pressure (throttle opening) is secondary, so don't worry about it.

As the miles increase, keep easing the revs up through the gears, and use more throttle in the next higher gear for short spells.

By the first service you should be briefly using 6-7k occasionally, and a quite big throttle openings at 4-5k.

After the first service, try to use plenty of throttle at mid revs, and progressively build the revs up to near max (9k) by 800-1000mls.

It's important to use the full revs and throttle at the end of the break-in to get the best possible condition of the rings and bores. Don't "baby" your engine, as the Americans say.
