Moving to London soon and am looking for advice on where to rent.
Mrs is working in victoria and I'll be working in the city more than likely. Don't really want to have more than a 30 minute commute. I had been looking at Acton/Ealing but decided it's just too expensive. What's the docklands like? |

Can't offer much input on this but as a note 30 minutes commuting will actually put you out quite far. For example I am a 25 minute (slow train) train ride from Streatham to London bridge which by road is approximately 7.5 miles out of the centre of London.
Then again I hear you can pretty much make it from Brighton to the centre of london on one of the fast trains in 30 minutes ![]() Just giving you a bit of food for thought. Speak to people like Thor, Kate, Jambo, in fact a lot of people here in the SOHO should be able to help. Benji |

I'm not sure acton or ealing are within 30mins of the city? However try shepherds bush which can be quite a bit cheaper like so many of these partially gentrified areas.

docklands? you a millionaire then? er a bit expensive....
I lived in Croydon which was half an hour by fast trains to central london. The good thing about using East Croydon is trains go both to Victoria and to London Bridge so both you and your wife can get to where youre going easily. It depends how far and long you want to commute. I know someone who travelled in from southampton each day. 2hrs each way.. ![]() Croydon is realistically half hour fast train from central london... brightons about hour and a half fast train... the offset is the further out you get the cheaper the accomodation but the longer your commute time. Unless you want to live in central london itself... but expect rents to be high though your commute time will be less. |

i sold property in olondon for many years and my g/f is currently a lettings negotiator in Muswell Hill.
Probably easier for you to let me know what sort of weekly or monthly figure you guys had in mind and i/we could advise of areas accordingly. Pm me mate and we'll se what we can do to help. its hard work reloacting to london as it is...even harder if you are the mercy of estate agents "advice" only.

Trains from East Croydon to London Victoria take 20 minutes at rush hour and are literally every 10 minutes or less, also, if you like going out up in town, you can always get home as the trains run throughout the night.
Personally, I live in Purley which is slightly further out but I can still get to Victoria within 30 minutes. Rent around South London isn't too bad but as always there are good areas and there are seriously crap areas. 1 bedroom flats start around £550 around the Croydon area. Docklands is pretty expensive, almost as bad as living in central London. I know people who pay over £700 for a tiny studio flat, or £500 a month for a room in a flat. Have you had a look at www.rightmove.co.uk? They are pretty good for looking for accommodation. HTH |

I live in Bermondsey which doesn't have a great rep. but is a) on Jubiliee line ie. quick access to West End and Canary Wharf (got a great Waitrose), b) 1 stop to London Bridge for the City or within cycling distance which I used to do, c) got an overground to Victoria, d) not so bad for kids/crime - I leave my Vespa on the street and it's fine.
I've got a mortgage tho' and don't rent so not sure on cost. I really like the area tho'. |
