Default Speeding in good ole Souf Effrica.

Durban - A motorcyclist on holiday in kwaZulu-Natal was caught riding at 275km/h near Sezela on the South Coast late on Tuesday, according to the NPA traffic inspectorate.

On Tuesday afternoon a routine speed timing exercise on the N2 "flashed" Pretoria businessman Johannes Barkhuizen at 275km/h on his 1200cc Kawasaki.

"This is the highest speed recorded in the province in a decade," said spokesman Collin Govender.

The bike didn't have a number plate and Barkhuizen immediately sped off on side roads, easily outpacing the officials who chased after him

"The authorities knew he would have to get back on to the highway, so they were waiting for him.

"After about 20 minutes he came back on the N2, going the other way, and we caught up with him – but he still tried to get away."

After he repeatedly escaped officials they finally blocked off the entire N2 and brought him to a halt.

"We had to put cars across the freeway," Govender said. "It blocked traffic in both directions."

Barkhuizen was taken to a roadside court where he was fined R30 000 for speeding and R1 000 for not stopping. He paid R7000 up front and the magistrate agreed to let him pay the rest in instalments, Govender said.

Traffic authorities were getting tough on drivers who thought they could avoid a fine by obscuring a registration plate or displaying a false number one, he added

A large proportion of the speeding vehicles caught on camera could not be prosecuted because of this practice.

"We are going to impound vehicles that we catch with obscured, damaged or illegal registration plates," he warned.

"This will inconvenience the driver and his passengers.

"Since Friday we have caught 51 motorists will illegal, obscured, or damaged registration plates."
