Default Mogs 1 Sciurus Carolinensis 0

Coming to work this morning pootling along with the park on my left. Mr. Grey Squirrel runs out from garden on the right. I hit the brakes hard. Fluffy turns tail in middle of road. I release brakes. Squirrel sees car approaching turns tail again and goes for it.

Bump, Bump, I've killed him.

Been feeling guilty all day

I know the feeling.. I cut a bunny in half once... rear legs and **** one way and head and front legs the other. Didn't half make the front end wobble.

I very nearly went over a cat the other day. I don't put the brakes on for wildlife anymore unless I'd actually be able to stop completely before hitting it. Instead, I just maintain a constant speed and make sure the bike is upright and then relax my arms, ready for the impact. I work on the idea that if you're close to the threshold of braking, hitting something will have you off, whereas if your speed is stable, there's spare grip in the tyres to deal with the knock. I don't know if there's any science in that but it feels the right thing to do. Thankfully the 3/4 times I've done this, said animal has moved out of the way in the nick of time.
