Default Replacement Tyre

Hi All,

I know it's the wrong section to ask this, but I need an answer.

Gotta replace the rear tyre apparantly as the standard Dunlop has (according to George White's - slough) seen the light.

I've done 7.5k roughly on it, the front they reckon is OK.

And they're now asking me if I want to replace the back tyre to either another Dunlop
OR
Replace both front and back.

Back Dunlop they want to charge me £110 inc fitting
Front and back to change to Bridgestone's = £1195 for pair inc fitting

Any ideas anyone on what would be best for me as I do a lot of mileage on the M4 motorway, and am I being ripped off ?

Cheers - Mass

I am sure I heard somewhere that the new Dunlop 208s have a hardened centre section for extended life for people who do a lot of straight line stuff... at least I think it was the 208..

A set of tyres for £1195 is definitely a rip off. Read the tyre section, lots of good info, but since you do a lot of miles a sport touring tyre like the metzeler z6, Pirelli Strada or Continental Road Attack etc. would be better as they last a lot longer than sport tyres.

Presumably it should be £195 for the Bridgestone's... Did you know what they were B020s? £195 inc fitting doesn't sound too bad... I paid £150 just for the rear a while back!

Bugga

That's £195 inc fitting for the bridgestones.

But they don't last as long as the Dunlops is that right

Anyway, told em to stick another Dunlop on, as I'm strapped for cash this month, as just come back off hols.

Maybe next time I'll look at changing, I'd be interested to know if that's right about the dunlops lasting longer?? anyone any ideas?

Cheers - Mass

I had my 7,500 service recently - and was in the same situation as you. Needed a rear tyre, but front tyre was ok. However - now I am pushing 10,000 miles and am hoping the front lasts another 1000 miles to next service! Has probably been close to the limit for the last 750 miles.

Sounds very similar as I do a 45 mile journey every day, with 35 of that being M'ways.

I replaced the rear with a Bridgestone BT020 and paid £130 fitted - so I think for £65 for a new front as well - it may be worth going for.

The BT020 seems much stickier, and is wearing at about the same rate as the Dunlop did.

Replace both and go for either Continental Road Attacks or Metzler Z6's

Bridgestone are oK but dont last long, I got 3500 miles out of a rear 020 and 6500 out of the front...

I promise you you'd have got one in the tyres section just as quickly .

As for tyres? My advice (for what it's worth) would be to chuck the front OEM Dunlop in the bin and put on a set of Conti Roads Attacks for £160 fitted. That's the going price from any reasonably competitive tyre dealer and will set you up nicely for the summer. As it's only fifty quid more than replacing the rear Dunlop with another one and far less than a set of 020s (which are not quite as good and offer much less mileage than the Contis) that's the decision I'd make. Naturally it's your choice .

Roadtecs and Stradas should cost much the same as well.

Earlier today Mitcheldever Tyres quoted £155.68 for a pair of Z6's fitted ride in/ride out service.

Guess where I'm going Friday!
