dont see why u should keep it in gear. i dont think anyone could react fast enough to avoid that, and if he did he would have gone into a line of moving traffic, possibly much faster.
i think ur in big trouble if someone goes into u like that, in gear or not! |

Seeing how this was filmed on a cop car's vidcam, looks like thr guy in the pick up truck was rubber necking the traffic stop and wasn't looking where he was going.

When at the lights my bike's in neutral. As I have a pair of eyes I can see when the lights change for the other traffic and slip it in gear waiting for the amber. And as Lee says, you've got mirrors, so best to use them.
And why some idiot wishes to display a 3.5 Mb animated Gif is beyond me, freakin' incompetence! . |

I in all honesty I fail to see how the occasional glance in mirrors would have prevented this poor motorcyclist getting walloped. Who was to say the Truck driver wasn't being a smart ass and looking to brake at the last minute?
I hate waiting at lights with no car stopped behind me,I always have the bike in neutral and do glance at my mirrors until someone has stopped behind me, until they do I pull the front brake lever to activate the brake light as a warning. Some of you guys with the later SV's could flick your hazards on in these situations as a bit of a precaution maybe? ![]() ![]() |

If you're at a set of lights with no car behind you you should also keep a the brake light on. See it very often when somebodies sitting waiting and no brake needed on a flat section.

When at lights I stop either just right or left of centre, in the cars wheel tracks. Working on the principles that there's little dripped oil at these positions and should a following car see me too late to stop then there will be space one side for them to run on.
That said I keep in gear until a vehicle is behind me, when they approach I tap the brake to illuminate the light. Hopefully the on/off/on is easier to spot. I'll ask my IAM observer when I see him next what they advise. |
