Default Rear shock possible problem ...

I've noticed some thick black oil at the rear of my bike after having it parked up. Its dripping off the swingarm towards the bottom. I've had a look underneath and there is a lot over the linkages and the bottom of the shock.

It would make sense that its the rear shock leaking as I hit a large hole with the rear the othe day and it packed quite a wallop. Just wondering if this is a possiblity. Theres nothing else in that area that I know of that could be leaking oil.

Without putting the bike on its stand and taking a better look I cant tell for certain. And havnt got the time at the moment. What do you guys think?

Thanks.

I have the same thing all over the rear linkage, its thick and not dripping.. I thought i may have been from my scottoiler or oil leaking from the gear selector shaft. Umm i would like to know.

Mine was dripping, not in great quantities but it had dribbled down the left side of the swingarm where the chain is and was dripping near the bottom. Only a small 1cm sized puddle though.

I had cleaned and oiled my chain before hand but not washed the bike. Rode it and left it over night in my friends garage and noticed the drip in the morning.

I reckon that is your problem. Excess chain lube. Wouldn't have thought the shock oil would be black. Whip off the front sprocket cover to see if any of the gearbox seals are weeping oil. I reckon it is just where you have overlubed the chain.

I've just started using wax based lubes because of the excess lube everywhere problems........................and cleaning the stuff off

If you do blow a shock seal, you'll soon know- it'll lose all its damping and be like a pogo stick. I doubt there's enough oil in an SV shock to make that much mess tbh.

From experience

There is quite a lot of oil in the shock, but is pretty thin (not sticky - its a bit thinner than engine oil iirc). If you suspect the shock, hav a look at the shaft while the bike is on the side stand - you'll be able to see it dripping down the shaft. The bike will also be extremely interesting to ride.

Changing the shock is easy if you have an ABBA or NWS stand. Although I'd suggest loosening and greasing all the bolts asap even if the shock is fine - Jambo and myself had a few problems getting them undone when we replaced the shock on my bike.
