Riding home last night (quiet motorway, engine at a steady 6500 rpm) the temp would show 77c rising to 85c over about a mile then drop back down to 77c again and repeat. Any idea why this happens? Ambient temp would have been around freezing if this makes any difference.

It's just the thermostat cycling nothing to worry about

Had that before, exactly the same situation, going home on an empty motorway at a constant speed at night. It's just the thermostat opening & closing
Bit worrying isn't it ![]() If the motorway had been busier, I probably wouldn't have noticed it |

Mine is all over the place at the moment, varies between 78 to 91 without much in the way of reason. My radiator being caked in mud can't help....

Just an addition, I sold my soul and went the way of the IL$ (gsxr600k4), however on carryiong out the last service I noticed that ttherre was some sediment in the bottom of trhe coolant expansion tank - IMHO that shouldn't happen after just 12 months, unless the supplying dealer had used tap water and anti-freeze, so I flushed the system and refilled with a propietry premixed coolant, temperature is now much more stable.

I have noticed while riding through different topographic areas within just an 80 mile radius from my house. That the outside ambient temperature can fluctuate by as much as 6 to 10 degrees F. even in the summer months. Which in my opinion raises or lowers the engine operating temperature accordingly at a constant speed.
Cheers! |

My temp sits between 180-200F (82-93C) .... i just figured it was the temp gauge polling engine temp VS that little fan kicking on behind the radiator.
Since it seems that everyones is doing it, i'm no longer concerned. |
