Default Boxing clever - or counted out

Having seen a small number of BMW's R1100s knocking around over the past few months and admired the looks of their newly introduced R1200S I was wondering what sort of bike these racier versions of the boxer engined machines are like.

From the specs they seem madly heavy. So where's all this mass come from, is it the flat twin or the Telelever front or just the price of having BMW build on a bike? I'd be put off by their mass, don't like the idea of schleping around a big lump of pig iron and I'd be fecked if I dropped it!

Does anyone here, without a predjuice against mobile toting outside lane munching Beemer drivers , reckon the R series boxers are good all rounders - commute, bit of a Sunday thrash and the odd trour?

Guy in work has one and claims the weight is so low down that he doesn't notice it even though it did concern him before he bought.

He loves the thing /shrug

Test rode an R1100S a few months ago. It is heavy pushing it around, but once on the move I didn't notice the weight.

It was very comfy, ride quality is excellent (that odd front end is great), I'm sure it would make a great all rounder, just didn't float my boat.

Would definitely recommend you have a test ride before you decide.

They still have some of the worst gearboxes out there. I don't know about the new one.

They work very differently to Jap bikes, and any preconceptions you take with you will only count against you, approach A Beemer with an open mind and you'll find they're very, very good.

The fact that some people can't get on with them only serves to illustrate how similar in function Jap bikes have become, it's really not that long since different makes and different nationalities of bikes really were tangibly different feeling. I suppose that because so many people now have grown up only knowing Jap bikes they feel that's how all bikes should be*, and they find anything different hard work. Anyone who thinks a BeeEmm is hard to get on with should try a Guzzi, great bikes, but they only work one way - Guzzi's way.

*Wrong, there's a whole world of fun stuff around.
