i need to know the difference in the coolant temp sensors for the '99 and '03. the obvious is that the '99 has two wires coming out and the '03 has a male plug end. if i was to cut the pig tail on the '99 sensor and splice it in would it work correctly on the '03? from the best i tell the sensor will operate the fan and most likely sends a signal to the temp gauge. does the computer get its signal from the sensor too? i have a 99 radiator mounted on the 03 bike and this is my last problem before getting the bike road worthy. i know the '99 is a carb bike and the '03 FI, but could it be possible for these two sensors work the same and send the same signal?
the easiest solution would have been to buy an 03+ radiator, but i was having a hard time finding one. i came across this one, so i bought and engineered it to fit. lol. thanks for any help that can be given. |

I'm not sure which temp sensor you're referring to, as there are two. The one in the radiator controls only the electric fan, the one in the thermostat housing runs the temperature gauge, and, I suspect, that info is used by the FI&I system to fine tune the engine settings.

As mentioned, the one in the rad is the fan switch only.
I say suspect, as very simply, other than applying 'choke' like settings when the motor is properly cold, I doubt the SV FI&I sytem has the complexity to fully account for variables such as specific engine temperature when deciding running settings. In fact, I'm sure it doesn't have the necessary complexity, it's not a modern car which is covered from head to sump in sensors for a gazzilion variables, and which get emissions tested from cold and a bunch of other circumstances which our humble motorbicycles don't, or at least not yet in this fair land, won't be long I'm sure.

K3 and carby fans are wired differently, but both are still just a switched earth with permenant supply and nothing to do with the fuelling.
To fit a carby rad and fan on a K3 you need to splice the fan wire and fit a male plug in line that will fit the temp sender plug. The fuelling is done off the stat sender, which is different between bikes, carby is switch to earth and injected is pos and neg direct, thread sizes are also different as is stat rating |
