Default Intresting Question for the knowledgeable people out there

After reading through the post's i cannot find the info required ..
Can anybody please help...

Got a new battery (Charged it up with the optimiser and had it on while it was inside the garage) for my SV650SY and took it for a run down to Wales a couple of weeks ago (had my lights on)... did 100 miles and stopped to refill the tank.. went to start and it failed to start.. sounded like a flat battery... Got a Bump start and continued the run to my destination (Lights off) and it was fine.. started no problem at the other end.. had no problems until yesterday.. drove 40 miles (lights on and drive time of about 40 mins) stopped again and it failed to start again.. symptoms of a flat battery.. Got a bump start again and continued my ride with the lights off and drove for 10 miles stopped the bike and it was fine started straight away during the day... Went down to see the good people at BanditMania today who check the Battery and Charging circuit and it was fine.. so stumped..

Any Advice would be grateful.. its a pain trying to bump start a v twin...

Battery terminals all done up nice & tight? A loose terminal can cause problems with cranking the engine over but appear otherwise OK.

Yes all the terminals nice and tight.. the nice guy at Banditmania/SV specialist had a look it at lunchtime today...everything obvious done.. he did say that i might like to inspect the wiring loom under the seat cowl to see if there is any chaffing of the wires.. need to do that after i get back from the Isle of Man next week.. away to watch practice week...

Did they check the alternator output? If it charges OK with no major current drain like lights on,but drains battery when things are switched on maybe output is low.

I had this on my first bike (not an SV) - would only ever happen after the bike had been running for a while then stopped - never had any trouble from cold. Turned out to be the regulator/rectifier was knackered and when they're knackered they can stop working only when they've got hot. A bump start or allowing the bike to cool for a bit will sort it out. As mentioned above - check the output and see what's going on, especially as the bike heats up.

I managed to leave one of the connectors from my alternator to my regulator/rectifier un-connected on my bike and it had similar symptoms. Bike ran fine with lights off, but with lights on battery went dead and then bike would splutter and stall. Might be worth checking all the connectors to your alternator.

Default Crap regulators

SV regulators are crap!! there, thats it, nothing else to it. Change it and your problems will be over - for a while.
