Default Diesel Bug???

My nephew is at Uni in Preston and lives on his Mum's narrow boat. It's been out of the water for a while at the marina but goes back in shortly.
Now my nephew says to his mum that it's got diesel bugs and he needs money to get it fixed.

Anyone heard of diesel bugs or has he just found a novel way to supplement his student loan?

I've heard of it.......not sure if its real or not!

Apparently they suffer with this in New Zealand. THe fuel is a lesser quality and they have to put additives in it to stop these 'bugs',Again, apparently, the 'bugs' have screwed up diesel fuel systems,(pumps/injectors etc) in NZ!

If he has them,it may be due to using 'Red' diesel, but who knows,I personally have never come across them. Water and other dirt in diesel yes.

Well there you have it 'Diesel-Bugs' do exist!!!

When I mentioned 'Red' Diesel,I meant it may be contaminated from where it may/may not have been stored,(Rusty oil drums/plastic containers/water contamination)as 'Red' itself is the same as conventional diesel, just with a dye in it,so the tax-man can do you!

Further to replies above I can confirm the the little bug-gers do get into diesel.

Had this problem at work very recently (Marine Engineer) and we're still cleaning filters regularly weeks later. We've got 2 large bunker (storage) tanks on board usually about 100 odd tonne in each and 2 day tanks with about 20 in each and got hit by the bugs. As previously mentioned the usual starting point is water, despite regular draining of tanks and purifying we still got hit. Filters just get choked up with a thick slime, horrible stuff.

Sent samples away to lab for analysis and also got some test kits ourselves on board. Carried out a few tests after the biocide treatment (nearly a grands worth of biocide) on what looked like perfectly clean fuel and the beggars were still there!

Me no likey bugs
