Reading on from this post about filtering...

http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=38346

Be honest.

When another rider comes up behined you, how do you react?

When YOU come up behined another rider, how to you ride?

When you come up to traffic lights and theres a queue of cars to your left, you could get in front with ease. No other biker can get in front of the cars though. You can move forwards accross the line, you can still see the lights, no danger, not impearing any pedestrians, and all the bikes behined you can fit in..... Do you move forward, or do you not even pay attention?

For me...

1) As soon as a space becomes available thats safe and doesn't require me to come off my throttle too much/brake too much, i'll indicate before the gap and move over. 95% of people show a boot or a glove in thanks...

2) I stick about 2-5 bike lengths behined (depending on traffic, speed etc). I give the person in front the chance to pull to the side (as i would above). If they don't, and go past numourous gaps, then when the next gap comes, i'll just go past (if they can't be bothered to check for other people on the road....)

3) I always move forward to allow every biker possible in.... Yet most bikers in london (Not couriers or scooters) just don't even seem to think about it, let alone check their mirrors (i usually need to give them the horn or rev my engine)....

Opinions? What do YOU do (be honest, this isn't a flaming argument post, im just interested in what others do)

If people start arguing over Mr A thinking Mr B is stupid and goes on a rant, i'll just ask for it to be deleted :P

1+2 - I don't pull in nor do I expect someone to pull in. It isn't a lack of courtesy, just that when filtering you shouldn't really be going that quickly. If I come up behind someone who isn't that confident filtering, then I don't intimidate them to move over, just wait patiently and I hope the same goes for anyone coming up behind me. Filtering is an opportunity to overtake stationary/slowly moving traffic, not a 2nd/3rd lane to the road!

3 - 9 times out of 10, I pull forwards, though sometimes it's not possible i.e if pedestrians are crossing etc. If someone doesn't pull forward for me, I don't rev or toot my horn to move them forward as I find this a little aggresive.

It all depends on the situation. totaly. Sometimes i move over, sometimes i sit close to the bike infront etc etc. Sometimes, im filter so god damn fast that i wonder how i got home.

In the case of the 3, I always move forward and to the left to make room for them to get to the front. Thing is they almost never bother and just sit where they are?!?!

With 1 and 2 I just ride normal, I don't try going past and I don't try moving over. Filtering requires too much attention to be devoting some to funny business like that.

I dont tend to hold people up though. It is annoying when you get those massive BMW things in front and they can't fit through a gap between 2 vans though!

Agree with you on 1+2, and actually with 3, though i should say when there is only really enough room for 1 bike to poke their nose in front of the first car, i only do that. if there's only a small crossing and then a junction, i don't want to be a pain to pedestrians either, who want to cross, by sitting my bike on the pedestrian crossing...

One thing i found funny from that thread linked to above - people going on the wrong side of the road - if the other side of the road is clear, i will damn well go there! as one of the instructors on my das said, the cars could do anything, the kerb's not gonna pull out on you is it? if you got space, use it...i'll stay as far away as possible from people who seem to want to kill me!

1. If a faster bike comes up behind me then I will move over at the earliest opportunity. Most bikers say thanks except those riding BMW's. For some reason they think they are better than other riders. Unless it's the same couple of guys I see everday which I guess is likely (doh).

2. If I come up behind a slower rider I am usually quite patient. But if they never check theor mirrors I may rev a bit to see if they notice me, but only if they are not filtering or doing what I call static filtering whereby they are in between lanes 2 and 3 but are going no faster than the very slow traffic. What's the bloody point in that?!

3. I always move forward provided there is room and it does not put me in danger.

I try to pull over to let some one past as I prefer to follow another bike when filtering.I use it as a "battering ram" to prewarn traffic we are coming through.I tend not to intimidate the bike in front for the same reason.I do try to move to one side at the head of a queue as well.No skin off my nose.Having said that I had a pedestrian have a go at me for being over the line at a set of lights in Kentish Town recently. Can't please all the people all the time eh?

Very rarely do i move over. If i think that im filtering slowly, which is unusual, then i may move over.

Depends on the bike in front. I will overtake if i feel the need. They know im behind them! What gets me are bikes with full lugguage on that cant filter yet just sit there blocking the path

3) I always move forward to allow every biker possible in.... Yet most bikers in london (Not couriers or scooters) just don't even seem to think about it, let alone check their mirrors (i usually need to give them the horn or rev my engine)....

Sometimes i will move forward. IF i cant get there, hten i will just sit a car behind. Would never rev the engine, or use the horn. If someone did i would just sit there anyway.

1. I try to stay aware of bikes coming up behind so I can let faster filetrers past

I must be deadly slow because this happens a lot and ....

2. Very rearly occours , when it does I avoid harrasing the rider in front.

3. Let as many bikes through as possible.

If anyone wands to do it differently - so be it

Hi

I only passed my test a few moths back and am still getting to grips with everything on 2 wheels , so I am not exactly a filtering demon (yet )

When I notice a faster moving bike behind me (as happens a fair bit) I tend to wave and pull over to the left , then they can over take me as / when they want , they know I know they are there ( If you catch my meaning) . If he's riding sensibly (IMO) I'll follow him and filter through for a bit , and pick up on his lines .

If I come upon a slower rider I tend to drop back and watch for a while , I give him/her plenty of time to show an intrest in over-taking , if none appears I'll take the next one drop a cog and rev it up , Yoshi cans are a godsend I tell t'hee .

If I'm filtering through static traffic , straight to the front , and pull slightly across the lead car for a couple of reasons , anyone else filtering can get upfront , and they cant help but see I'm there . As im 'making progress' through the standing traffic , I'll blip the throttle a bit let em know im commin through , I'll also flick some headlights on too .

Hopefully Soon
