Default Finaly some truths about Iraq

I dont wanna stir up any trouble but i thought it might be important for those who believe the hype and spin put about by the papers and Govts to read what the people in the know, on the ground really say about the current situation in Iraq, for both Iraqi's and occupation troops.

The cable, signed by the US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and sent to the State Department in Washington on 6 June, is wholly at odds with the optimistic account of developments given by President George Bush and Tony Blair in their recent visits to Iraq. from today's Independent newsapaper article.

CONFIDENTIAL MEMO
FROM: US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, Baghdad
TO: Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State
SUBJECT: SNAPSHOTS FROM THE OFFICE
SENSITIVE

The full leaked report

And before you ask, no I'm not Admiral Akbar Hussain in disguise

i'm sure that after the hard time poor old AH was getting for posting about these issues that he's probly seen this article and thunk twice about posting it.

However as i'm fairly neutral on this topic mainly i thought this would make interesting reading for those who dont read anything else but Govt sactioned stories that put a positive spin on the situation all the time.

Anyway, i really dont want this thread to deteriorate into some of the recent name calling ones so please read and discuss in a mature way peeps.

And if there is going to be name caaling let me say this first.
I'M RUBBER AND YOU'RE GLUE, BOUNCES OFF ME AND STICKS TO YOU!

Sadly having seen how my own coutry went thru this and where it is today, my only solution would be a time machine back to before the invasion.

But even then i dont think there was any way of stopping them wanting to go in and do what they are doing now.
A million plus peeps walk thru London (not counting the rest of the global protests) protesting it and they are ignored, evidence is made up to justify their plans and international law is ignored by the Lord Chancellor who to this day hasnt justified what made him change his stance from illegal to legal.

It certainly does make for interesting reading.

Along similar lines, did anyone see a program on (I think) the History Channel recently called "The World War"?
It highlighted the nature of 'ethnic cleansing' that occured when Former Imperial States rebuilt themselves/were rebuilt by others as Nation States. Very good programme.

That was a good evening as I recell as there was a programme following it that centered on the line in the American Marines 'anthem' "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli".

It basically told the story of the first time, as a young country, the Americans decided to play world police in Tripoli (now Libya [sp?]) in an attempt to stop the north African countries exacting their traditional 'Tribute' (the revinue by which they survived) by piracy in the Med.
(God, that was a terribly contructed sentence! It can stand as a testiment to my English teacher's failure to instill any notions of grammer into me.)

Dad channel rocks.

At the end of the page it says:

(This is an edited version of the memo).

Edited by who? Surely editing it in anyway at all could change context etc?

I must admit I have a bit of a problem with the Independent since the day after the Beslan outrage, they had the first 3 pages of the paper listing issues with George Bush - you know the sort of thing:

3 - The number of x done by y

etc

I can see why they want to have a go at him (however pointless it may be), but it seemed to me that someones personal opinions were getting in the way of news, which goes against what the Independent says it stands for.

That aside, I was wondering the other day how the rebuilding of Iraq is going. The government said that it was proving too dangerous to do any infrastructure improvements, but unless they do, they're hardly going to get the Iraqi people on their side - quite the opposite.

But thanks for taking the time to post the link Spiderman - it's good to read things one may not have seen otherwise. Certainly not having a go at you!

Interesting reading but I have my doubts to its authenticity.

The way its written doesnt strike me as how a diplomatic memo about these issues would have been written.

Until the real memo is produced, it calls into question the whole thing about what the editor added or amended into the document and what is real [if its real at all which while I accept is a possibility its also a possibility its not].
