Default I saw a BMW X5 4x4 yesterday...

... in the outside lane of the motorway flash his/her lights and slow down to let a micra overtake a lorry.

I'm perplexed. It can't have been a mum taking the kids to their pony lessons, she'd be too busy on the mobile screaming at the aupair to even notice the micra. And not the normal X5 jock either, cos he pays more road tax, which makes it his lane.

So how to explain such abnormal courtesy? Maybe someone taking a test drive ("Sorry, its not for me" when they handed it back), or a horrible mix-up at the car hire centre?

Answers on a postcard please.

Accidently knocked his coffee over which resulted in hitting the headlight stalk and take his foot off the accelerator?

The 4x4 was clearly stolen - nobody who owns one would be that courteous.

Or the light flashing was an "out of my way!" signal, then they went to stamp on the gas but hit the brake instead, while the dozy Micra driver didn't notice any of this and pulled out anyway. It just looked like they were being courteous.

Most likely. Here in Sweden, flashed headlights mean 'I'm coming through, gbet out of my way!' Took me a while to get used to that......

...which is the sort thing they're supposed to be used for. The way we have ended up using them in the UK to mean 'please go ahead' probably causes a lot of accidents. So you flash your lights to warn someone you're there, so they pull out 'cos they think you're letting them in. Kerrunch!

I almost got flattened by a reversing BMW X5 at the Guildford meet a couple months back. The driver was deciding whether or not to get out and check cos he was surrounded. Makes me chuckle now.
