Default USB2 PCI card.

Hi all you computer tec's
this is my problem.
I bought a USB 2 card 5 port (4 external 1 internal) on ebay @ 6 quid ... installed it .
my system is a Packard Bell iMedia 5075 with 1.25Gbs Ram, 2.6 AMD CPU, 60 Gb HD, 64Mb Gforce 3 AGP card, Running XP professional with service pack 2 dected it and installed the driver.
so far so good..
when you plug in any decive, ie LG SuperMulti DVD writer it only works for about 2 minutes then does not play... also the printer has a problem printing, and my Digital camera fujifilm Z1 doesn't work...

when I uplug them and plug them in the computers USB1 ports they all work ok... only slow.

So my question is this...
1) Is the card fooked as I've tryed downloading the most upto date drivers for the ALi USB2 A1 5273 chipset, or should I throw it in the bin and get a new card.
2) Can a USB1 computer run a usb2 pci card?
3) is there something I'm doing wrong?

thank you in advance for any suggestions

Possibly.

HTH.

Any more questions about your gearbox? I was on firmer ground there.

Thre are some issues with the old AMD procs and chipsets with USB2. Have you checked MSFT for a fix, motherboard update mabey?

You could also try going into the bios and dissabling the onboard USB card.

Also its possably due to IRQ sharing that causes issues with high speed devices.

I would think it'll be either.

1. the USB2 PCI card you've bought is knackered.
2. Your PC doesnt support USB2
3. Theres some kind of IRQ conflict going on between the PCI card and another device in your PC. Personally I doubt this as your bios should have plug n play which should sort this out.

Question, If you remove the PCI USB card and put everything back as it was before it started does it all work OK again.

If so have you got a mate with another PC that you could try that USB2 card in. If it works in another PC. its likely to be a conflict or that your PC doesnt support USB2. If it exhibts the same symptoms in a different PC the card is knackered.

Can't disable it.
