Default What does this bit do?

Anyone got any tips on how to go about learning what the various parts of an engine actually DO?

I am happy to admit I'm a complete numpty when it comes to this stuff, and I was wondering if anyone knows any good resources to turn me from a numpty to someone who can at least read the bit in Streetfighters magazine where it says "ported and gas flowed the head" without a look of intense concentration bordering on veins-popping-out-in-the-forehead...

Hmm. I can feel I'm probably gonna get a bit of (hopefully) good natured abuse from this post. Bring it on!

buy a totaly shagged engine and take it all apart carefully and understand what each bits for etc.. If the engine is running then better as you can put it back together afterwards and see if you have done it properly.

An engine in principle is a simple thing and there really isn't much to know, it's really just a pump, although used in reverse so to speak, instead of putting motion in to get pressure out, we put pressure in, (in the form of a burning gas expanding), in order to get motion out.
As an SV is a four stroke engine, in this circumstance gas flowing and porting are two greatly abused terms that refer in principle to changing the shape and/or size of the tubes, (called ports), in the cylinder head that carry gases on their flow in and out of the cylinder, such that the flow characteristics will be, hopefully, improved. In times past it was sometimes possible to make a tangible improvement in the engine's overall efficiency by careful reshaping of said tubes, however as modern engines are very well made, it's not often possible to get an overall improvement, and as such and any porting done will be made in the hope of improving flow and thus efficiency in a certain part of the rev range, nothing comes for nothing sadly, and commonly any improvement made will be accompanied by at least as great a loss elsewhere. Ordinarily this type of tuning work will be done to race bikes in order to increase peak flow and thus pump more gas, the trade off is that bottom end power usually suffers, as your average racer isn't much bothered about filtering in traffic this isn't a problem.

This is a great simplification of course but the principles are illustrated I hope.

The giggle pin is connected to the foo foo valve which in turn spins the flux capictor through a 180 degree revolution engaging the crank spindle which then wakes up little dwarves who sprinkle magic dust too make you go faster....it's easy when you know how

Which wasn't that helpful TBH...

I want to do a proper accredited one, but 'coz I work in the 'glamorous' world of TV I can't plan on having any regular time in which to do stuff. Which is a pain in the rear, frankly!

I think TSM's idea might be a good one tho', and may help to while away the cold winter nights...

The net is awash with info at your fingertips. SO theory is easy enough to source.

But there is nothing better than getting your hands dirty to learn.

Get yourself a donor minimoto, even new they are only £60 these days, you will be able to get a broken one for peanuts (and might be fun after too ) ... they are the most basic of 2-strokes Or a strimmer, chainsaw or whatever from down the dump.

Next 4-strokes - Get yourself back down the dump and pick up an old 'green roller' type lawnmower and take it apart and try and work out what does what ... chances are it will still work anyhow, so you can hopefully have it running before and after ... they are the most basic of 4 stoke engine, but the suck-squeeze-bang-blow, carburation and ignition principles are exactly the same on ya modern motorcycle! That's 4 stokes sorted.

If you can get to grips with these most basic of engines then you will be able to move onto more compex engines.
